Disappointing Hosts

The 83rd annual Academy Awards took place on Feb. 27th, 2011. With low ratings in the past few years the Academy decided to direct the show towards younger audiences. Since the show was made to be appealing toward young viewers the Academy decided to bring in a couple of young actors to host the awards.

The two who won this coveted spot were James Franco, who was also a nominee, and Anne Hathaway. Since the announcement there has been a lot of hype on whether or not this pairing would be able to deliver.

Well, sorry to say, but they were not. Instead of bringing a classy young feel, they brought a classless, over-worked show. James Franco was lifeless, some say he was trying to balance the overenthusisastic Anne, but he simply seemed like he did not want to be there. As a nominee, I believe James just wanted to sit back and enjoy the show, taking it all in. Instead he had to put on a happy face and dance around a stage.

On the other hand, Anne Hathaway tried way too hard to be a friendly host. Always smiling and laughing,  trying way too hard to entertain everyone in the audience.

But, it is not all their fault. This year has been one of the worst shows because of the material that was given. Although the beginning was funny and entertaining, it felt more like a Saturday Night Live skit, not the classy Academy Awards.

Also, in the middle of the show Anne Hathaway performed a number that just turned out to be awkward. Regarding Hugh Jackman, this song and performance just seemed forced and not a fun way to bring the audience back into attention.

Another way that the Academy tried to appeal to younger audiences by doing a “year of the musical” and creating songs out of movies that were clearly not musicals, such as "Toy Story 3," "The Social Network," and "Twilight Saga: Eclipse." Although this was clever, it just got pity laughs and was a failed attempt to entertain youth.

All in all, this was one of the worst Academy Awards in the past decade, which is a shame because it was awarding some of the best movies of the decade.

A Calling to Serve

It’s the end of February; the third quarter is winding down, and many of us are finding ourselves entrenched in our schoolwork or other extracurricular activities. With the start of the spring athletics season and the new musical, many of us will find ourselves with very little time on our hands. However, it is in times like these that we need to step back and make sure our priorities are in order. Are we really using our time in a manner pleasing to God? Or are we devoting much too much of the day to ourselves? Often the first thing we forget when delving into our busy lifestyles is the calling we have to serve one another. Philippians 2:3-4 says, “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” As Christians we are called to serve each other in love and humility, giving up our own time to help others. But how can we practically apply this to our lives today?
There are dozens of service opportunities all around us. In our school, in our church, in our community – anywhere you look you can find a chance to help out. Right here at Westminster you can choose to be a part of the Community Outreach team, which takes part in various outreach efforts such as Feed My Starving Children on a regular basis. There are also opportunities in your community that go unnoticed all too easily. From something like helping out a neighbor with a snow-covered driveway to volunteering at a local food pantry, opportunities abound. So let us not allow these plentiful opportunities for service to fall by the wayside. Let’s remember our calling as Christians to serve one another and take an active part in the service opportunities we have been given.

Last WWI Veteran Dies

After turning 110 on Feb. 1, Frank Buckles passed away this past Sunday. He served as a U.S. Army ambulance driver in Europe during what became known as the "Great War," and rose to the rank of corporal before the war ended. His fame came about at first because of a man who took a survey and interviewed the last men standing from WWI. However, over the years all but Frank Buckles passed away, leaving him the famous last standing veteran.
Yet, Buckles became truly famous when he was asked to testify in Congress. His mission was to see to it that his comrades were honored with a monument on the National Mall, alongside memorials for veterans of World War II and the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. He testified  before a House committee on Dec. 3, 2009.
During WWII, Buckles was a ship's officer on merchant vessels. He was captured by the Japanese and held captive for over three years, when he was finally rescued by fellow U.S. troops.
Fulfilling his dream, renovations began on the WWII memoral in Washington D.C. this past fall. His health, however, prevented him from visiting the site and reviewing the improvements. More information on Buckles and his ideas can be found at http://www.frankbuckles.org/.

Trashy TV

Why is trashy TV so appealing?

This is a question that has begun to be asked with recent hit shows like "Jersey Shore" and "Gossip Girl." In today’s society many teenagers are attracted to shows of stupid people acting, well, stupid. Good TV is no longer attractive, such as shows that make you think, or comedies that are well written. So why are students so attracted to these shows?

Well, some say that it makes them feel smarter, and gives them the opportunity to laugh. Another reason students give for watching these trashy shows is that it lets them escape their hectic everyday lives. But why do students feel the need to watch trash?

As long as these shows keep making money teenagers will keep watching them. Trashy TV has no rhyme or reason to it; it's just a way for teens to escape their everyday life.

Everyone Has a Different Taste in Music, Here's Mine

There are so many different types of music out there nowadays that it is hard to know exactly what to look for.

Of course, it’s difficult to write an article about music because of the vast amounts of different types of music out there, but mostly because of the variety of personal preferences. One person may think one band is the best band ever created, but then another person could think that they are just painful to listen to. Neither of these people are right or wrong; it’s all just a matter of what a person likes to listen to.

So this article is merely going to be an opinion piece about what kind of music I listen to and what kinds of things attract me to bands personally. Personally, I can never listen to country or rap, and even many pop bands, because they all pretty much sound the same. They never try to change their sound to make it their own because they realize that they don't have to because they will make money anyway.

Many great bands will take styles of music that we know and twist them a little bit to make it their own. This can be as subtle as just taking alternative rock and giving it a little bit of indie sound, something Tokyo Police Club and Spoon do very well. A lot of great bands will take a specific genre and give it their own indie twist. One band that did this and took a big risk by mixing in some country to their sound is the fantastic Band of Horses.

Every once in a while a more indie band will actually become very popular and win a few awards, like The White Stripes or the Black Keys, or more recently Arcade Fire. It’s exciting when this happens; it shows that the media doesn't only listen to rap or pop anymore.

Lately, many indie bands have been taking a more electronic-mixed-with-alternative sound. Most bands with this sound have been pretty successful with this approach, like Passion Pit, Miike Snow, Yeasayer and MGMT.

Some indie bands stray so far from anything we know that it’s hard to classify them and they begin to just fall into a genre of their own. These bands include Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, the Dodos and mewithoutyou. When bands do this, it creates an opportunity for other bands to follow in their footsteps and also go their own way.  These are all great examples of bands that managed to create their own sound and stay original throughout their whole career.

So in the end, the two things that make the biggest difference personally in whether or not I like a band is if they have an original sound, and they have to have a certain level of intensity to their music. This last part is necessary in whether or not I either really like a band or love a band. If there is no intensity in the performance, then it is much harder for me personally as a listener to get into the music. Some bands that bring a lot of intensity to their music are Arcade Fire, the White Stripes, Sigur Ros and Sufjan Stevens, and those are just a few examples. It's important to realize that intensity doesn't mean that they jump up and down and run around a lot. but that the musicians themselves are really into their music and really care about what they’re doing.

Once again, I will say that this is just my personal view on music and that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But I would urge you if you enjoy a certain type of music that you would take a look at its more independent counterpart and maybe you will be surprised and enjoy it.

A child named Facebook

Would you ever name your child Facebook?.......  Nope, I didn’t think so. But a man in Egypt thought it was an all right name. He named his firstborn daughter Facebook in honor of the role the social network played in the recent revolution.

It has been reported by the Al-Ahram that the Internet played a huge role in how things played out in Egypt as Hosni Mubarak's regime toppled.

Facebook became a big deal in Egypt after all of the social networks had been shut down by the Egyptian government. Nobody was able to get into the websites until they started to use proxy websites to “get around” the blocking of the websites. Because of the fact that the “blocking” was no longer working, they began threatening to shut down the internet in all of Egypt.

Facebook began to be a strong force in the protests. The youth of Egypt were able to be reached and everyone got in on the protest. Hosni stepped down after a wave of protests. After 30 years of unhappy people, Egypt finally celebrated.  Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram reports that Gamal Ibrahim gave his daughter the name “to express his joy at the achievements made by the youth.”

Thrifty Finds

Why does everyone pay hundreds of dollars for a brand name?  I don’t; I pay barely anything for designer names.

How do I do it, you may ask? I shop at thrift and discount stores!  And I'm not the only one.  Cassie King also likes to shop at thrift stores.  She goes all the time and finds the great outfits you see her in on a daily basis. There are many great places to shop, but you have to make sure that you gop to a good one. Try T.J. Maxx and Goodwill; both are great stores  where you can find good quality.  But the experience can be some of the best times that you have.  Try bringing some friends and finding the craziest outfits in the store for each other to try on, and the results can be quite hilarious.

So grab some friends and head over to your nearest Goodwill or wherever you feel is the best place to shop and just have fun!

An Italian Disaster

Amanda Knox was studying abroad in Italy, living a dream. Now, however, she is a convicted felon in Italy for the murder of her college roommate, Meredith Kercher.

The debate of her innocence goes back and forth like a ping pong game. There are little hard facts on her connection to the murder, but speculations prove harsh.

On the morning of Nov. 1, 2001 police were stopping by Amanda and her roommate’s dorm house to drop off Amanda’s phone which she had left at a public location. The police showed up to the house to find Amanda and her boyfriend, Rafaelli Sollecito, with a mop standing outside of the house. Police asked what had happened and they said they were so glad the police had arrived so quickly, they claimed that they had phoned the police earlier. They say they found traces of blood along the floorboards and Meredith’s door was locked. The police proceeded to break down Meredith’s door and find her body covered in a blanket, and drenched in her own blood. The police convicted Amanda of murder, as well as her boyfriend and a man named Rudy Guede.

This is recently in the news because Lifetime recently came out with a movie on this tragic incident. The movie caused much speculation to the families who were affected by this tragedy. They say they felt nauseous and had some strong words against the film.

Regardless of what the media says, I feel that the movie leaves the decision up to the viewer. The film didn’t persuade; they simply presented facts and left the viewer to decide. It’s sad to think that such things can happen, but they do. And sometimes, justice is hard to declare because most are uncomfortable with it.

The Fine Art of Curling

Buried deep within the forests of northern Wisconsin is a place for athletes to hone their skills in the art of curling.

Recently I took a trip up to Rice Lake for a snowmobiling trip. Unfortunately, there was no snow on the ground, so instead we went ice fishing. As you could imagine, staring at a hole in the ice for multiple hours at a time is no fun. We needed something to squelch our boredom. The family ventured into town, and I will never forget what we found: The Rice Lake Curling Club.

It was the answer to our prayers. The facility contained four fully-operational surfaces for games, and all the equipment was generously supplied to beginners.

Now despite what people actually believe, curling is a very difficult sport to master. The stones are made of granite, and therefore very heavy. The object of curling is to slide the stone along the ice towards a bull’s-eye, and have the stone stop in or on the bull’s-eye. Two people using special brooms have the ability to steer or speed up the stone by sweeping the ice in front of the stone.

After a few tosses and much frustration, the helpful people working there showed my friends and me some techniques. They were very nice and patient, as we probably looked like fools in their eyes. After about an hour of practice, we held a competitive game with a different group of people. We lost of course, but the experience was great. I wish I could go back.

Budgeting For College

College these days is extremely expensive, and unless you play sports or are super smart, you probably won’t get too much scholarship money from the school of your choice.

To those still in their freshman, sophomore, or even junior year, keep your grades up and take the ACT as many times as you can because a one or two point difference can make for a lot more scholarship money.

Also, be active in extracurricular activities, or even volunteer on several community service projects, because those could also help you with getting scholarships or grants.
Now for the seniors who don’t really have the opportunity to raise your GPA or take the ACT more than a couple times before going off to college, start saving money if you have a job, and if you don’t, start looking for one for either now or for summer.

Another thing you can do is start saving birthday and graduation money, or possibly investing it. Also, look for scholarships and free grants, because there are some unusual ones out there that you might be eligible for.

So don’t be scared about the big price of college because if you start saving now, you won’t have to worry as much when you get the bill.

Everybody Loves Superheroes

Everybody loves superheroes! Little kids admire and look up to them, men want to be them, and women want to be with them. When I was a child, I would spend hours upon hours in my room playing with my beloved Batman action figures.

If you like superheroes and their movies, you’re going to have a good summer. The list of movies coming out is long including “Captain America,” “Thor,” and “Xmen: First Class.” I’m personally excited for all of these, especially “Thor”--I mean, who doesn’t like a guy with a huge hammer? When I saw the preview at the end of “Iron Man 2,” I was so pumped in anticipation for the movie. It looks like it will be action-packed, full of adventure, and will probably have some romantic connection, like in most movies. So I recommend that you go out and see these movies if you like superheroes.

Libya In Distress

The situation in Libya has spiraled into a national crisis, leaving the violence-stricken country in a state of disarray.

Preexisting tensions between the Libyan government and citizens have boiled over into a chain of violent protests spreading across the nation. Rumors of civil war have emerged and left many Libyan citizens terrified and without any sense of security. Riots have broken out in cities all across the nation, resulting in violent clashes between protesters and military forces. President Moammar Qaddafi – President of Libya for the past forty-one years – has ordered strict military responses to the anti-government protests.

However, many defections of the armed forces have refused to follow these violent orders. According to sources at wordpress.com, “the eastern cities are protester-controlled, but Tripoli [the capital] has at least temporarily been bludgeoned into submission and is saturated with pro-regime forces, other western and central towns are reportedly under attack by military units, and now Qaddafi is contemplating how to regain control of the east before his authority completely unravels. The regime seems to have a shortage of reliable forces, as the army is reportedly divided along tribal lines.”

Across the country there have been thousands of reports of brutal violence and repression from the Libyan government. President Obama and other world leaders have cut off transactions with Libya, voicing their opposition to the violent crackdowns. This is just a start to the aid this ravaged nation is in need of.

The millions of voices calling out for freedom in this nation must be heard, and it is the responsibility of our nation to respond to these cries.

WCS advances to Regional finals

Westminster Christian coach Bruce Firchau said the scare Mendota gave his Warriors in Wednesday’s regional semifinal at Plano might work to their advantage come Friday.
Last season the Warriors entered a Class 1A regional as hosts, expecting to win, only to be stunned when Chicagoland Jewish pulled off the upset in the regional championship game in Elgin.

Playing for the first time in a Class 2A regional 21 victories later, the Warriors watched the 10-point lead they had pieced together midway through the third quarter evaporate more quickly than snow in late-winter sunlight. However, they regrouped, continued to play good defense and hit key shots late to survive with a 43-37 victory.
No. 1 Westminster Christian (22-5) advances to Friday’s regional title game against No. 2 Genoa-Kingston (12-15), which defeated host Plano 61-57 in Wednesday’s second semifinal. The Warriors seek the second boys basketball regional title in school history.
“In one sense maybe this is the best thing that could happen to us tonight, that we would have a real intense opening game that was tight, no breather,” Firchau said. “Maybe that will relax us for Friday night to play like we’re capable of.
“I think there was no doubt that our memory served us in a bad way from last year’s regional upset.”
No. 4 Mendota (10-21), which had been limited to 3-of-21 shooting in the first half, sank 6-of-10 shots in the third quarter and finished the period on a 12-1 run to take a 26-25 lead to the fourth quarter.
Junior Drake O’Donnell came off the bench to hit a pair of 3-pointers, and 6-foot-3 senior Zach Lewis sank a pair of free throws to stake Mendota to its first lead since early in the second quarter.
But the Warriors opened the fourth quarter with a pair of inside buckets from 6-9 senior center Ian Dutcher to take a 29-26 lead.

Dutcher scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter to go with 11 rebounds.
“The whole game I was trying to get open,” Dutcher said. “I don’t know what happened, but in the fourth quarter I was just finding the right spots to get in. They were getting me the ball in wide-open spots.”
Senior guard Brandon Cork sank a clutch 3-pointer from the corner to give the Warriors a 34-30 lead with 3:20 left, and Luke Carani later spotted Dutcher behind Mendota’s half-court trap for an easy layup and a 38-32 advantage with 1:32 to play.
“Anytime you see Ian under the basket your eyes light up because he can just put it in every time, basically,” Carani said.
However, pesky Mendota didn’t go away quietly. The Trojans pulled within 38-35 on a 3-pointer by Ross Arteaga with 58 seconds left.
“Down by 10 any team could have given up,” Mendota coach Jan Thompson said of the third-quarter deficit. “It shows a lot of heart and pride in an adverse situation. We battled through and were able to pull back within a few points and made it a ballgame. I’m real proud of our kids.”
Westminster Christian sank 5-of-8 free throws in the final minute to fend off the Trojans, who missed their final 2 shots to finish 13 of 42 from the field (31 percent).
Carani finished with 9 points and Cork added 7 for Westminster Christian, which defeated Genoa-Kingston 53-39 on Dec. 11. The Warriors intend to shrug off Wednesday’s slow start and come out firing.
“I think we just came out a little bit nervous being our first regional game,” Cork said of the semifinal victory. “It’s nice to have that at the start of the tournament. I’m pretty sure we’ll bounce back.”

Pep Club Gives Pep Bus Another Try

The Warrior boys’ basketball first regional game took place Wednesday, Feb. 23.

With this year's regional hosted in Plano, the Pep Club decided to make transportation easier for the fans by getting a pep bus. In order to pay the bus fee, the school needed 50 students, but regrettably only 19 signed up. This led to the assumed result, a cancelled pep bus.

Yes, Westminster is a small high school, but 50 fans isn’t that much to ask. There are several possibilities that may have contributed to the cancellation. One is the day of the week. Wednesday fall in the middle of the week, which means homework has not yet loosened its grip. Wednesday also bring with it youth groups and church services.

The second possibility is the $15 fee. Some students didn't sign up out of complaint for the “high” price (but in actuality they had themselves a pretty solid deal).

The third and most disheartening possibility is our overall lack of high school pep. Although the Pep Club should be credited with the pep and jolly they have spread throughout the high school halls, they can only do so much. At some point the high school students need to put on their big kid fan pants on and step up the pep.

Nonetheless, Pep Club is back and trying again for a rescheduled bus on Friday. This time, however, the fee is only $10. The fee includes the ride, entrance into the game, and a blue poncho (for extreme fan purposes). Friday gives Westminster its second chance to step up and pep up.

Britney Spears still manages to make a hit

A lot can be said about Britney Spears. Maybe something like how she started as a child on the Mickey Mouse Club or how she shaved her head a few years back. Either way, we all know Britney Spears. What amazes me the most is that no matter what she does, illustrating herself to the public in a racy way or relations with ex-husband Kevin Federline, she always makes a hit. For example, her new song “Hold It Against Me,” despite all the past incidents she’s had, was still on the top 10 billboard.  Even though the things that she does are less than honorable, the public is still willing to support her

Usually when a celebrity portrays themselves as something negative, his or her fans begin to like them less. But for Spears, it’s a totally different story. I’ve noticed that no matter what she does, good or bad, her old and new fans still adore her.

I think that fans are still fond of her because they choose to not look at her negative side. Also, they may feel bad for her in some ways or believe they know how she feels. I personally have always liked Britney Spears no matter what she has done. Yeah, she shaved her head, but I think that was a new beginning for her. Her songs are always great and up-beat. She made such a big hit in the 90’s that it’s almost impossible to see her in a negative way.

I think Britney Spears is going to end up staying very famous, and many people will be disappointed when her music stops, rather than joyful.

Prayer Service Done for Bus Crash Victims

A bus carrying a church youth group from Louisiana to Georgia flipped Sunday on Interstate 20 in Mississippi, killing one person and injuring 23 others. Volunteer driver, 61-year-old Won Chae, sacrificed his life for Light of Love, the youth group. As of now, only four people are left hospitalized; the others have been released.

The bus flipped over three times and trapped two people underneath. One person died at the scene. Three were airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, including one with severe head injuries. The others were treated at three hospitals in Meridian.

"Our congregation is leaning on our faith and confidence in God," First Baptist senior pastor Greg Hunt said.

"I guess it was the younger kids that were going up to the retreat, but it could have been any of us. We go up there pretty often, the same camp spot that we go to," according to Mike Chang, churchgoer.

"He felt like that was his calling, in terms of voluntary, because he was a professional driver. He thought could be of a service to church," states John Cho, church deacon, of Chae/

"I heard that he's been very devoted, and he's been volunteering as a bus driver whenever there's an opportunity. We are very sorry about it," according to Youngsil Lee, churchgoer.

Protesting Picks Up Across Midwest

Protests in Madison have been going on for over a week now, with Republican governor Scott Walker proposing new plans dealing pensions and cuts for state funding for all state workers.

From firefighters to school teachers, everyone being paid by the state is in this together. Most of them protesting have no desire for it to be a "political protest," but rather a "rights protest" for the Union. They don’t want their promised pension for retirement and current pay to be affected.

The state along with almost every other state in America has been experience huge deficits in their budgeting. To alleviate this, some governors have needed to take large cuts in the state budget. First to go in these cuts are the funding for pension and state workers’ pay. Also recently, the governor of Indiana has proposed a similar bill that would take away some benefits of state workers. Only two democrats out of 40 showed up for the senate vote on this bill, effectively blocking votes on all these labor laws.

Governors and politicians alike show no sign of stepping these bills down as of right now. They understand that they can’t fall short of the budget. Everyone has to take some type of cut to fully recover from the over spending that has been taking place on both a federal and state level.

Les Miserables

One of the biggest musicals ever to grace the stage is celebrating its 25th anniversary. This musical is none other than "Les Miserables."

The doors first opened for "Les Miserables" in 1985 at London’s Barabican Centre. After twenty five years, "Les Miserables" is officially the longest running musical on Broadway. And this wonderful musical is now back in Chicago.

"Les Miserables" tells the story of Jean Valjean and his rise from the gutter. Following his many trials and triumphs, this musical surely brings about every type of emotion one can face in three hours.

Even with expectations as high as the moon, this musical cannot possibly disappoint. Everything is excellent, from the superb vocals, to lighting, and new staging. This tale of the French Revolution is a musical that one cannot miss.

Egypt Update

The riots in Egypt are declining slowly, yet political unrest still defines the nation. The leadership in Egypt is very unstable and likely to bend to political forces. Egypt’s former President Hosni Mubarak has stepped down in compliance to the demands of the masses. Yet he has not gratified all the wishes of the protesters by putting into office the Vice President Omar Suleiman in his place.

In a speech to the nation of Egypt, Mubarak has made it evident to the people, though in a clouded manner, that his position is one of title and does not actually hold much responsibility. The true authority will be in the form of The Supreme Council of Armed Forces, who activated a government takeover last Friday.
The Egyptian government has promised that President Mubarak will be voted out of office by September of 2011, but this decision has left many protesters without satisfaction, and just as angry. As of right now, according to World Magazine, “An eight-member panel of jurists and scholars has launched a fast-track review of Egypt’s constitution—even as the composition of the panel remains a point of controversy since it was announced on Monday. The panel is expected to help provide a roadmap for transition to both parliamentary and presidential elections in the wake of three weeks of street revolt that prompted a military takeover last Friday.”

Though the military has official control of the nation, there is still much instability in the proposition of holding a presidential election. Egypt has only held one other presidential election in its history, the one voting in Mubarak in 2005. That makes this election a very risky procedure, especially in the midst of the violence Egypt and the whole Middle East has been experiencing. There are no overnight fixes for the political and militaristic turmoil Egypt is in. Yet the Egyptian government’s hope is that by September of 2011 there will be sufficient order in the nation to hold a successful presidential election, bringing democracy, peace, and prosperity back to the largest nation in the Middle East.

Asian carp disrupt environmental peace

In the first week of December 2009, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources made an effort to exterminate the population of Asian carp that were headed to Lake Michigan by dumping 2,200 gallons of the toxin Rotenone into a canal outside the lake. However, these efforts proved mostly futile as only one Asian carp was found and nearly 90 tons of other fish were killed. Because of the threat that Asian carp have created, desperate measures to get rid of this species have been considered.

Researchers have realized the problem that Asian carp could pose by being in the Great Lakes. These large fish are what scientists call an invasive species. This means that because they are foreign to our country, they have the potential to badly disrupt the environment. Since Asian carp have no natural predators here, they reproduce freely and thrive off of almost every other creature that lives in freshwater. "They just eat so much," says David Ullrich, executive director of the Great Lakes and St.Lawrence Cities Initiative. "They're like the locusts of the river."

This problem began in the 1970s when Asian carp were introduced into the United States. They were originally brought here by Catfish farmers to eat up excess algae in their ponds, but before long, the carp had escaped into the Mississippi River. Since the invasion of this foreign species, wildlife control workers have been trying to extinguish these fish from our lakes and rivers.

Celebrating Black History Month

People have been celebrating Black History Month since 1926, but it was originally just celebrated for one week known as “Negro History Week.”  In 1925, Carter Woodson began to work for a “Negro History Week.”  He got his idea out through schools, journals, and newspapers.  His purpose was to honor and remember all the great African Americans of America’s history.

In 1926 his work finally paid off and he was able to pursue his dream of a “Negro History Week.” In 1976 his idea flourished and soon became “Black History Month,” which is what Americans still celebrate today.  For his achievement, NAACP awarded him the Springarn Medal.  The month of February was selected because of the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

Carter Woodson was always spirited when it came to celebrating the achievements of African Americans.  He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915 and the Journal of Negro History in 1916.  He also founded Associated Publishers in 1955 and the Negro Bulletin in 1937.  He spent his whole life telling people of the achievements and success of African Americans throughout history.  However, his most memorable achievement will always be the success of “Black History Month.”

Crossroads Attends Toy Story 3 on Ice

Wednesday, Feb. 9th, I had the chance to experience Disney on Ice: Toy Story 3. After Crossroads, Matt Armstrong picked Eric Martin, Shirley Irwin, Kelsey Albrecht, and I up from our school.  Then, he took us to his house to pick up his wife and two daughters.  Joe Maydak and Johnny Santiago, two other Crossroad leaders, met us at their house.

When everyone arrived at the Armstrong’s house we piled into cars and headed for the United Center.  Before we got there we stopped at Qdoba, a Mexican food restaurant.  After we finished eating we finally went to the United Center.

After arriving we went to go find our seats.  We were originally scheduled to see the show the 2nd but after the blizzard they had to reschedule it for the 9th.  Therefore, we had to exchange our tickets.  However, we were originally up in the balconies, but the only seats left when we exchanged them were seats a few rows from the ice.

After we found our seats, Eric, Shirley, Kelsey, and I all went to look at souvenirs.  They had so many different options, from Woody and Jesse hats to T-shirts and cups with snow cones inside of them.

The show began with Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck, and Goofy all skating onto the ice and explaining what we would be experiencing and watching.  After they skated off, Andy skated on.  He talked about how he was going off to college and how he had to decide what to do with all of his old toys.

Then, all of Andy’s old toys skated on.  The first act consisted of the toys reminiscing about life when Andy was a little boy and still played with them.  They reenacted Rex defeating Zurg, Buzz and Woody being stuck in a toy vending machine at Pizza Planet, and the story of Jesse’s previous owner.
After the first act was over there was a short intermission and then the second act began. The second act was when the plot of “Toy Story 3” took place.  They discussed going to daycare and meeting new friends there and then being betrayed by them.  They left out a lot of scenes from the movie that would be hard to recreate, but they still mentioned what happens in the scenes they left out.

After it ended we immediately discussed what we thought about it.  Johnny Santiago had never seen the movie “Toy Story 3” before so it was hard for him to follow.  But those that had seen the movie loved the show.

Overall, Disney on Ice: Toy Story 3 was very well done.  I would recommend it for kids of all ages.

Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation or forced labor, a modern-day form of slavery. According to a 2004 report from the Human Rights Center in Berkeley, California, there are an estimated 10,000 forced laborers in the U.S., around one-third of whom are domestic servants, and some portion of whom are children.

Human trafficking takes away the rights of the woman and forces them to become objects rather than people.  This is forcing woman to become prostitutes, which is illegal. Woman involved in this may be scared, not knowing a way out. To them it may seem like an impossible dream to ever be free.

The National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC) is a non-profit organization against sex exploitation. Their phone lines are open 24/7, 365 days a year, ready to talk to anybody who needs help. You can take action and help fight again this corruption and have a slave free world.

Bieber hits box office

Justin Bieber came close to coming in second in the box office this past weekend. His documentary came up with 30.2 million dollars. He was just a little under a million dollars to getting first in the box office where Miley Cyrus’ documentary from 2008 stands. His movie "Never Say Never" impacted not only the children but also the parents. Many fans came out of the theater crying, because his movie is very inspirational.

The movie started out with showing that he was naturally born with the talents he has today. When he was just 2 years old when he started playing the drums. When he played, his family was amazed when they actually heard a rhythm. When he was four he got his first drum set and went from there. Bieber can play the drums, guitar, trumpet and piano. Soon he also wants to learn how to play the violin. A great addition to his music playing is his fantastic voice.

Chocolate, Yum

Milk chocolate is by far the most favored chocolate in America.

It’s the generic chocolate in everything, from Snickers and M&M’s to Reese’s and Hershey’s Kisses--milk chocolate is the soul of chocolate lovers.

White chocolate is in a lot of delicious things as well. And in my opinion, it makes the world go round. The white chocolate mocha from Starbucks, for example, is a wonderful thing. It’s also fabulous in cookies, especially macadamia nut. But I would be personally offended if someone got me white chocolate for an occasion such as Valentine’s Day.

Dark chocolate is the delicious stuff that I would want for Valentine’s Day. Not only does it taste amazing, but it’s also much healthier than milk or white chocolate because it contains natural antioxidants. Dark chocolate also makes a mean chocolate chip cookie and is used in a lot of other recipes as well. Though white and dark chocolate definitely hit the top of the charts on a delicious scale, a s’more just wouldn’t be a s’more without the traditional milk chocolate.

Warriors win final regular-season game

The Warriors took on the home Mooseheart team in their final regular season game.

Both teams defenses struggled in the first quarter as the Warriors jumped out to a 26-19 lead.  The Warriors would hold Mooseheart to just 21 points the rest of the game though as they beat Mooseheart, 60-41.
\
The Warriors were led by Andrew Mason (16 points) Ian Dutcher (14 points) and Brandon Cork (11 points).

Teen Stars, Ugh!

Hannah Montana. You see the name and if you are someone with common sense like me, you cringe.

That girl has single handedly built up and torn down her own empire of billions of screaming tween girls. In my opinion, I would rather have my children watch horror movies than her brain numbing Disney sitcom. In fact, I would rather sit in silence my whole life than listen to one of her poorly written, disturbingly creepy songs. Just hop on itunes and search her song “Obsessed”--that girl needs to learn how to keep some things to herself.

Anyways, I am not a mindless Miley-hater--oh no, I’m armed with facts. In 2010 Miley had finished her sitcom (thank goodness) and came out with a new song to add to her ho-hum collection. This song is called “Can’t Be Tamed.” Let me first start off by saying that this was the straw that broke the camels back. Think back a little earlier to when someone had (accidentally) cast her to perform at some teen award show.  She sang her new song “Party in the USA” which was not a terribly obscene song but just had some questionable lyrics. Anyhow, while singing this song she proceeded to pole dance on an ice cream cart with daddy Cyrus watching in the crowd. Everyone was shocked, to say the least, and 12-year-old girls everywhere sobbed when their moms said, “no more Miley” (smart moms).

Later on when her song “Can’t Be Tamed” hit radio stations, it included questionable lyrics. I guess all that all I have to say to this is: I’m tired of these teen stars with young followers, gaining this major fame and then crushing their original fan bases and disappointing them. I guess it goes to show you how fame and fortune can bring out the worst in people and how nobody seems to learn from past examples like Britney Spears. While I could say more on this issue, I have to go comfort my younger sister and explain why the Disney channel is locked on the TV now.

Snakes

Last week, I went to a National Guard recruiter and he had an office pet, a snake. This snake is named Perseus and is a baby python. He’s only seven weeks old and is so cute. I had never held a snake before so it kind of freaked me out when I found out that he’s actually pretty warm. I guess since I’ve was always taught that reptiles are cold blooded, it made sense in my head that they wouldn’t be as warm as humans or dogs.
Everyone seems to be completely disgusted by the fact that I held a snake. What’s the big deal? He’s hardly a foot long. He can’t do any damage yet. Yes, reptiles are rather creepy and the fact that he was shedding his gross skin cells all over me was not too appealing. But there’s really nothing wrong with him. The way I see it, he’s one of God’s creations. Maybe there are horror stories of snake bites and weird deaths from snakes, but everything is capable of hurting another being. There really is no need to single out certain animals and fear them or put labels on them. They do what they were created to do by nature.

Trashy TV

Why is trashy TV so appealing?

This is a question that has begun to be asked with recent hit shows like Jersey Shore and Gossip Girl. In today’s society many teenagers are attracted to shows of stupid people acting, well, stupid. Good TV is no longer attractive; no one wants to watch shows that make you think, or comedies that are well written. So why are students so attracted to these shows?

Well, some say that it makes them feel smarter, and gives them the opportunity to laugh. Another reason students give for watching these trashy shows is that it lets them escape their hectic everyday lives. But, why do students feel the need to watch trash?

As long as these shows keep making money teenagers will keep watching them. Trashy TV has no rhyme or reason to it, just a way for teens to escape their everyday life.

Downward Spiral

Lately it seems that Billy Ray Cyrus’ world has been crumbling down around him. In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Miley Cyrus’ father talked about his daughter’s poor choices and out of control actions, as well as what he thinks caused the tragic breakdown of their family.

To set the stage for this present situation, let’s look back about eight months ago when Miley came out with her controversial music video, “Can’t Be Tamed.” This was certainly not the first incident that caused many to look down on her (there were others like dancing on a pole, posting suggestive pictures, and posing almost nude in a "Vanity Fair" cover…), but it is one of the most shocking, especially since she once proclaimed to be a Christian. Since then, Miley Cyrus has released other music videos that mimic the same sexual content. In addition, she has also had her fair share of scandals in the past year. Not too long ago she was caught giving a lap dance to a 44-year old man, and later on she was also video taped smoking drugs from a bong at her 18th birthday party, which was held in a bar. These actions pushed many people away, including her fans and even her own father.

According to Billy Ray Cyrus, he blames some of the downfall of his daughter on himself, saying that he wishes he would’ve been a better parent, rather than a friend. Admittedly, he also stated that the TV show that made Miley famous is destroying their lives. "I hate to say it, but yes, I do. I'd take it back in a second," said Billy Ray, talking about “Hannah Montana.”
Cyrus is certainly a concerned father and rightly so. Taking into account the path she’s on right now, he says that he doesn’t want to see Miley end up like Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain and Anna Nicole Smith. Billy Ray expresses his concern well by saying, "I'm scared for her. She's got a lot of people around her that's putting her in a great deal of danger. I want to get her sheltered from the storm."

Critics Give New Skinny Pepsi Can a Big Fat No

Diet Pepsi has introduced its new "skinny can,” which was first presented at New York's Fashion Week and will be released to consumers nationwide in March.

Nothing has changed about the diet drink itself; it just sports a “taller, sassier” new can exterior. The spark of controversy ignited after the company announced the can was made in “celebration of beautiful, confident women.” Of course, its premier being at one of the world’s biggest fashion events didn’t help too much either.

"Our slim, attractive new can is the perfect complement to today's most stylish looks, and we're excited to throw its coming-out party during the biggest celebration of innovative design in the world," Jill Beraud, chief marketing officer for PepsiCo, said in a statement.

Critics are arguing, however, that it’s hardly something to celebrate. Woman’s body types are undeniably a touchy subject. Pepsi arguably crossed into a dangerous territory of body image stereotypes. As with most controversies today, society took the inconsiderate slip up and ran with it.

The National Eating Disorders Association, for example, said it takes offense to the can and said the company's comments are both "thoughtless and irresponsible."

Suzanne Labarre at design blog Co.Design wrote, “Now even a soda can tell women that their butts will always be too big.”

Even brand experts who praised the new design noted that the brand is slightly off with its sales pitch. Pepsi has responded to these criticisms by replying in an e-mailed statement, "We are sensitive to this interpretation, and that is definitely not our intent.

"We intend to highlight the innovative look for Diet Pepsi and provide our fans with an 'inside look' at events that celebrate innovation and style."

If nothing else, Pepsi has definitely gotten the amount of advertising they were wishing for, just not in the intended form.

Cubs vs. Sox

As we all know there has been a rivalry between the North and South sides of Chicago since baseball began.

This year is no different, and because of this rivalry there has been a division between fellow baseball lovers. Some are Sox fans while others cheer on the Cubs. Personally I must side with the Sox because they have won a World Series in the last 100 years, unlike the Cubs. Also, the Sox have the support of the President, who has been a Sox fan most his life. Although the Sox had a disappointing finish last year, they at least finished ahead of the Cubs.

Now the Chicago Cubs are a baseball team that does not know what to do with all of their talent. Baseball is a team sport in which one player can sway the fate of the entire game, but if he does not have a team behind him that he can trust the team falls apart.

I am sure this season will have its ups and downs but I still do not see the Chicago Cubs or Sox winning the World Series this year. As bleak an outlook as that may be, it’s the truth.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a day of love, but who was feeling the love?

To find out, a poll was taken with 80 Westminster High School students. Thankfully, a whopping 35 students reported that they were "Feeling the Love."

37 students said that they were feeling mellow and just rolling with the day.

Sadly, 8 students said that their hearts were broken on Valentine’s Day. Hopefully those children bounce back and realize that they'll always have a Valentine, one who will love them forever.

People Don’t Read Anymore

In this day and age, people can find much better things to do than pick up a book and read. Our society is so filled with technology that books really just don’t matter to us anymore.

Now there are still some that think a book is much better than a movie, but that is a small percentage. People would much rather watch a movie than read a book.

Books were thought to be entertainment for those who need something to do. But now we have cell phones, movies, and computers. We have even found a way to read without picking up an actual book. That’s just sad.

Our society has lost its sense of creativity since all we can do is think of technology. People don’t like to just read what’s in front of them. They like to read what interests them. Since we have been coming up with all these new phones and computers, people don’t really want to look down at a book when they could be looking at something that they find really interesting. The newspaper is still widely read but even that is being taken over by television and the internet.

Overall many people would rather focus on the T.V., then read a newspaper or watch a movie instead of reading a book. Though reading is not as popular, it will never leave our society completely.

Best and Worst of the Red Carpet

Everyone loves the Grammys. Sometimes it’s for the dresses and sometimes for the music, but personally I watch it for the dresses.

The best dress definitely had to be the dress that Selena Gomez wore.  It was classy and simple, not to mention that it flattered her nicely.  It was well-fitted and was not too revealing. It complimented her figure quite well.  She made a good choice going with the nude tone because it had just the right amount of boldness.

Gram’ma Funk the DJ, on the other hand, had it all wrong.  She wore a too-small, extremely revealing blood red dress that she was just spilling out of.  The design felt like it was two dresses sewn together and it did not flatter her at all.

Gaga for Gaga

Everybody knows who the extraordinary Lady Gaga is, and there is much debate over her.  Is she a freak, is she just living her life for herself and not caring what people think?

It doesn’t matter whether you think one way or the other. Lady Gaga fought hard to get to where she is and she made herself known. I respect her very much for fighting for her dreams and never giving up.  I also respect her for her bravery, not caring what people say. She does exactly what she loves to do exactly how she wants to do it.  She is an individual putting out the message that people need to be themselves.

Yes, I will admit that she has had some very strange outfits, such as the meat dress, but she is just doing something that she hopes will get the message across.  I think that people should just leave her be and accept the fact that she does what she wants and has made it to where she is by fighting so hard.

A huge snow storm hit the Midwest and Westminster started feeling the effects Tuesday when we were dismissed halfway through the day.

The snow piled up higher than it ever has and road conditions were the most treacherous they’ve ever been. The snow left a 2,000 mile trail of the lands its hit. Some people were out of power and many people had to hide themselves in their houses to prevent getting stuck elsewhere.

Before the storm had even started, no one was sure whether or not to believe the Weather Channel when they told us how much snow to expect. The expected snow fall went from 24 inches to 10 inches, then to 20.

This is the third worst snow storm in all of Chicago’s history with 20 inches of snow. With record lows, you have to remind yourself of the wind chill and how cold that would have been as well. Many schools were closed for 2 days and many children didn’t play in the snow because of the frigid conditions.

So remember Chicago, bundle up and stay warm.

Halo: Reach, recommended

My brother Ben and I became close friend while playing Xbox together. The day after I met the Bertsche family, Ben was playing the Xbox 7 in the morning. He taught me how to use the controller, which was really difficult and I had to look down every time I was trying to do something. Since then, I have mastered the controller and have sometimes beaten Ben.
The new Halo, Halo: Reach is now our favorite game. There are so many things people can do in this game, which is the reason why Ben and I play this all the time. First of all, we can create our own characters and change armors, even to pink! We can also create our own maps and buildings. There are many sniping spots on the map with mini version of the wraith, which is my favorite vehicle.

Playing online is fun, too. We can talk to other players, which helps with our social skills. The game is much more organized than before, with better graphics. When you are about to die, you can even turn into a droid and run away from aliens.
Even though there are some bad things about this new Halo, such as people coming out of nowhere on the online game, the fact that falcon cannot shoot in multi-player setting, and the need to buy online to play match making. Despite all of these faults, Halo: Reach has definitely opened a new, advanced game market. Moreover, it is good memory to Ben and me forever.

Phone upgrades coming soon

A new cell phone is the best thing to get even if your 1 or 92. Having the "new and improved" Smart phone in your hands makes you feel like maybe for a minute you’re just as technology savvy as Steve Jobs (Apple CEO).

Most, if not all cell phone companies, however, make you wait at least two years to get an upgrade discount on a new phone, while other newcomers get percent off the new droidsuperawesome5000 phone. The faithful customers are sent a "patience is a virtue" vibe with a two-year upgrade plan. This upgrade plan basically says, wait two years for the new customer discount. So while your friend, Steve, who just switched to your phone service, gets $400 dollars of the $500 dollar 2011supercoolawesome6000 phone you’re stuck with your 2002ehimprettycool100.
Some recent cell companies like U.S. Cellular have heard the cry of embarrassed old phone owners demanding upgrades to look as cool as their friends without the standard (overpriced) rate of a new phone. Since U.S. Cellular started this, a lot of customers have taken their business there. Realizing that this technique of “phone upgrades” makes new customers satisfied and makes money for the company, it would be in my opinion more beneficial to give customers the discount a little earlier at least.

This week at the box office

This past weekend at the box office it was a close call between three new films.

Adam Sandler's newest romantic comedy “Just Go With It” is at the top with 31.0 million. Right behind in second is the Justin Beiber film “Never Say Never” which brought in 30.3 million. The third top grossing film of the week was the animated comedy “Gnomeo and Juliet.” After these three movies there is a drastic jump down to the next film. Number four on the list, “The Eagle,” only made 8.6 million.

A quick look at the box office shows just how depressing a state Hollywood is in at the moment. These films are just movies that exploit popular actors or musicians just trying to make an easy buck without any creative writing or filming involved whatsoever.

Hopefully this is just a bad week and we will experience much better films in the weeks to come.

Teen Suicide Awareness

Suicide, believe it or not, is the third leading cause for death in teenagers. There is an estimate that for every one suicide made there are about 25 attempts.

It is nothing to joke about and is around us everywhere. A good majority of teenagers have death thoughts and contemplate ways to take action. If a suspected case is near you, don't give them a chance to contemplate it or act upon it. The serious cases usually are from depression, possession of firearms, substance abuse, aggressive behavior, or disruptive behavior.

Gender also has an affect on the given situation. In fact, males are four times as likely to commit suicide than females are. However, teenage girls are more likely to attempt suicide than teenage boys.

Suicide is no laughing matter. Even a joke can go too far. To find out more information on teenage suicide, visit http://www.teensuicide.us/. Do not be afraid to talk.

Lunch Time Valentines

The love was spread around today as the WCS business club passed out valentines to fellow students during lunch.

For only five dollars, students were able to buy a balloon with some treats attached to it. A little note was also attached with the balloon. People were asked to Sadie's, siblings and parents sent out some, "big sister" seniors sent them to their "little sisters," etc.

Even though not everyone got one, the love was still in the air on this glorious Valentine's Day.

WCS girls season ends

The St. Edward girls basketball team knew all it had to do this week was stay focused and take care of business in order to win the program's 14th regional championship.
Mission accomplished.
But now the Green Wave know the challenges become greater.
St. Edward jumped out to a 30-4 lead midway through the second quarter and cruised to a 68-32 win over Westminster Christian Thursday night for the Class 2A St. Edward regional title.
The Green Wave (20-7) will take on Chicago Latin (19-10) at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Westminster Christian sectional semifinals. Timothy Christian and Walther Lutheran meet in the other semi on Tuesday with the championship game and a trip to the Willowbrook supersectional next Thursday.
"We just needed to keep our level of intensity up this week and work on some things," said St. Edward coach Michelle Dawson, whose team lost to Immaculate Conception in last year's regional finals.
"We kept our composure and we were the true definition of team. I'm proud of them. They were hungry for it and ever since Senior Night I've seen a different level of concentration and focus. They're not going to let anyone tell them there's something they can't achieve."
St. Edward established its dominance with defense and by pounding the ball inside on offense. The Wave had 15 steals in the game, led by junior Callie Johnson's five. St. Edward forced Westminster (15-12) into 23 turnovers on the night.
The Warriors came out with a game plan to freeze the ball and work for a good shot. But St. Edward's defense, led by Johnson up top, thwarted the Westminster plan. And when the Wave wasn't scoring on fast breaks, they sent the ball into the paint, leading to a game-high 16 points from junior center Alex Lee.
"We just wanted to keep going to the post and going hard," Lee said.
Westminster trailed just 7-4 midway through the first quarter when St. Edward went on a 23-0 run that didn't end until the Wave led 30-4 with 3:25 left in the first half.
"We had a ton of focus, we worked hard and we really wanted it," said Johnson, who scored 13 points and had 9 rebounds. "We just have to take the mindset that this is going to carry over to sectionals."
Senior Enza Ranallo had 14 points and 4 assists for St. Edward. The Wave had a monstrous 49-20 advantage on the boards, led by 9 from Lee and 8 from Paige Gannon.
Two freshmen McKaila Hays and Claire Speweik led Westminster, which is in Class 2A for the first time, with 6 points each.
"They're a good basketball team," said Westminster coach Ken Flickinger of the Green Wave. "I don't think we've seen a team shoot that well all year. We had a good game plan and we had good looks, we just couldn't get the shots to go down.
"But this is a historic team for us. It's the most wins we've had on more than a decade. The girls' goal was to reach a regional final so we've raised the bar."

Warriors lose first game of new year

The Warriors suffered their first defeat in the new year to Oregon High School.

The Warriors struggled with their shooting throughout the game while falling to Oregon 62-59.

The Warriors were led by Ian Dutcher (22 points) and Luke Carani (12 points).

Online Classes a Frustration

English class giving you a headache? Tired of sitting in class day after day listening to a teacher ramble on? Well, consider yourself fortunate.

Let me explain. As a senior at Westminster, I am one of the few students who chose to take an online class at ECC for my English credit. I made this decision thinking it would be a nice break from the norm, but I was sadly mistaken. Little did I know what I was getting myself into.
The added difficulties of taking a class online make it a rather miserable experience. The time it takes to figure out what the homework is is comparable to the time it takes to actually complete the assignments. This added confusion makes it much more difficult to get assignments in on time. There are also different “discussion posts” that require your feedback, such as commenting on another student’s post. This is obviously much easier in the classroom setting, where you can simply discuss the topic aloud with your classmates and teacher.

That is another negative aspect of online classes – no teacher. Although some may think that not having a teacher around would be a good thing, it is very inconvenient when you have a question and cannot ask it except through e-mail. It slows down the process of getting your work done and is not as helpful when you don’t understand something. Having a teacher available to ask questions and talk to is something that normal English class students ought not to take for granted.
Another aspect of online classes that I have not appreciated is their susceptibility to procrastination. Instead of daily homework assignments, all my assignments are due on Monday and Thursday by midnight. This means that unless you are a very dedicated student, it is all too easy to find yourself cramming to finish your homework at 11:59 p.m.
Overall, online classes can be beneficial. But from my personal experience, they are nothing but an added frustration.

Crossroads Kids Club helps children

Crossroads is a Christian organization that is open to the children of Streamwood and Hanover Park.  Children who come to this club are served through after school programs and a summer camp.  The clubs consist of snacks, games, prizes, and Bible lessons in a large and small group.

I volunteer at Glenbrook School in Streamwood.  Our club starts at 2 p.m. and lasts an hour and a half.  A typical day at Crossroads is goes something like this:

The other volunteers and I arrive before our group leader, Teesh, is usually just finishing large group.  Before that, they had snacks and did a few games.

When we arrive we almost immediately go into our small groups.  Each leader has their own small group.  Small groups usually last about 20 minutes and consist of asking how their week is going, asking what they learned in that day's Bible story, talking about the key idea of the Bible story, and ending in prayer.

After small group, we have games.  We usually play about three games, whether it's dodgeball, line tag, or relay races.  Depending on how much time we have, games can last up to 20 minutes.

After games, we announce the group that “wins” for the day.  The groups are the small groups, and are divided by the different color jerseys that they wear.  They wear the same color each week.  They win by earning the most points.  They earn points by winning games, or being exceptionally good in large or small group, or by listening when others aren’t.  The winning group gets a large candy bar.  The other groups get one piece of candy.

Crossroads is available to anyone at Westminster.  If you are interested in joining or have any questions, you can check out their website, http://www.crossroadskidsclub.com/, or you can talk to Mrs. Dutcher.

The Princess and the Pea

On Feb. 4 and 5, Westminster Christian Middle School performed "The Princess and the Pea."

This was the biggest cast the middle school has ever had for a play. With forty students, this led to a very interesting play. The story was an adaption of the classic story about the Princess and the Pea. But, there were many differences, including all of the princesses the prince went to visit. These different princesses included silly Diana Dingaling and the alien princess Zebrina.

There was also another difference with this production. Instead of Mrs. Chapman directing the play, there was a guest director, Mr. Giordan. He is a very talented director and focuses most of his time on character development. Mr. Giordan also is an artist and has written many books on photoshop.

In the end, the middle school cast gave four hilarious performances and everyone who came had a good time.

Forest People are everywhere

They are everywhere, yet no one notices, silent, but impacting our society in numerous ways. Forest People are slowly infiltrating our society and spreading their grass-roots message of empowerment through leaves. Spawned from the great roots of the Grand Oak Tree (located somewhere in Oregon), these bearded creatures have ruled forests and various shrubs for ages.

The first recorded sighting of Forest People occurred in 1824 in Northern California. Eyewitness accounts were published in local newspapers with titles such as “New Intelligent Creatures Found!” and “People of the Trees Make Contact With Normal-Folk!”

The term “Forest Person” was coined by local Bill Perdikaris who explained that they only live in the forest, and therefore need to be named after their habitat. The creatures were studied intensively and were discovered to be asexual, and seemed to have a native language of their own. Various grunts and animal sounds made up the bulk of the dialect, but possible telepathic communication is also suspected. Around the mid nineteenth century, Forest People seemed to disappear from the great forests of northwestern America. Various theories are present, but many believe that the Forest People had become agitated by our continual prodding into their culture and our inability to use magic.

Worldwide reports, however, have recently found that the Forest People population is growing at a rapid rate in other locations. With the current high deforestation rate, these Forest People have less and less space to work with, and therefore are forced to adapt to our society. The universal traits of a Forest Person are a foot-long snow-white beard and a walking cane fashioned from oak or pine.

If you believe that you live near a Forest Person, do not feel intimidated, as they only use their magic to defend territory. With friendly gestures and polite words, any Forest Person situation can easily be defused. Treat Forest People with respect, or else they’ll suspend you upside down from the nearest tree in the blink of an eye.

YouTube, a distraction?

As we can all attest to, the Internet can present itself as a problem when trying to study for a test or school in general. Some people are addicted to Facebook, while others are constantly on Addicting Games, but as for me, I have a weakness for YouTube.

YouTube is a well-known video site where people can express their opinions to fellow video lovers and sometimes get noticed enough to make money. But mainly, YouTube is for people who just want to be heard. YouTube also helps complete strangers to commune on common ground. YouTube posts everything, (except if it considered offensive) which allows the “people” to decide which videos are good and which are bad. This is unlike a newspaper, where editors pick and choose which articles will appear in the news that week and then hope the people are interested in those articles.

Now the reason I am so addicted to YouTube is because of the vast wealth of knowledge available. YouTube is not just useful for entertainment; it can also serve as a tool in almost any project you need help in accomplishing. For instance, if I do not know how to change a light bulb, I guarantee that there is a YouTube video explaining in detail how to change a light bulb.

YouTube can be a distraction if not taken in moderation. When study time comes around, YouTube can both be a useful tool or an evil distraction. It all depends on the goal you are trying to achieve when watching the video. YouTube videos can be used to enlighten you to a new concept which you had never heard, or it can be pure entertainment. Either way, YouTube is a useful tool, but if you are not careful it can be a huge distraction!

Girls advance in Sectionals

The Westminster Christian girls basketball team went into the St. Eds Regional as the number 2 seed and would play Willows Academy.

The Lady Warriors started strong and held a big lead for most of the game.  However, Willows Academy clawed their way back into the game and took a two point lead into the final 2 minutes of the game.

The Warriors would respond though with a Katie Moeller layup and two Claire Speweik free throws to give the Warriors the lead once again.  Whitney Vanden Bos relinquished any doubt in the final outcome of the game with two free throws to put the Warriors up 4 with about 15 seconds left in the game.

The Warriors pulled out a hard fought 45-41 win and advanced to play St Eds for the Regional Championship.  The Warriors were led by Katie Moeller (10 points) Katie Surrat (9 points) and Claire Speweik (9 points).

Some Super Bowl Commercials Were Pretty “Super”

On Sunday, Feb. 6, many Americans turned on the television so that they could watch the Steelers and Packers play against each other in the 45th Super Bowl football game. However, the game wasn’t the only reason that people tuned in, and for some it wasn’t the reason at all.

Every year people look forward to seeing the clever, funny, and interesting commercials that air during this nation-wide event. These usually include many advertisements for Budweiser, E*Trade, Coca Cola, and more. Each year the commercials have brought something funny and new to entertain their audiences.

This year was no different. Most of these commercials are only around a minute long, but they do a great job of conveying the message that they want to send about their product. Certain ads like Doritos and Pepsi got lots of laughs and are still being talked about. Other clips that weren’t as funny are usually not as memorable. The commercials that use clever thinking and humor most likely end up being successful in sales, as well as popularity.

Do you like pizza?

Do you like pizza? Well, I sure do! It’s a tasty pie from Italia but America has made it their own. Whether you’re in New York, Chicago, or anywhere else in America, good pizza can be found.

New York style pizza is thin with a flimsy crust. It has a little sauce with a good amount of cheese on the top. Chicago style pizza is a deep dish with a thick crispy crust, a lot of cheese at the bottom and chunky sauce on top of it. The combination of thick crust, gooey cheese, and chunky sauce makes a rich pizza that you have to eat with a fork and knife.

In my opinion, Chicago style pizza is way better than New York style pizza because it is rich and full of flavor. The best Chicago style pizza can be found at Lou Malnati’s, Pizzeria Uno, or Giordano’s.

They are all the best in their own way and have combinations that are out of this world. So go out for pizza tonight and find out which is your favorite!

News of White Stripes devastate fans

The White Stripes started from being a small garage band in Detroit to one of the most recognized rock bands of all time. Over the course of the past thirteen years they won 5 Grammys and several MTV Music Awards. They also have released 6 albums in the span of their career, some of the most popular being "Elephant" and "White Blood Cells."

The duo of Jack and Meg White has unfortunately announced that the band is no more in a letter to their fans on their website. The letter tells of how they have decided to stop touring and that they will be making no more music together as the White Stripes. It reaffirms that both Jack and Meg are in good health and that there are many reasons for the break up, none of which Jack White goes into. However, Jack White says that he will still continue to do work with his other bands.

This is truly a sad day in music history, as we see the fall of one of the all time great bands. But their original sound, catchy drum beats and guitar riffs will be long remembered even after they are gone.

Super Bowl anticipation

The Super Bowl is something that is well anticipated for die-hard football fans. Many people look forward to watching the numerous commercials and watching the Packers dominate the Steelers! Ha-ha, just kidding.

The Super Bowl also contains an amazing halftime that many talented artists perform at. The Black Eyed Peas was been confirmed to perform at the Super Bowl’s halftime. They are going to perform at Cowboys Stadium on Feb. 6th. The Black Eyed Peas are known for their diverse style that really gets the crowd going.

We will not be disappointed. Alongside the Black Eyed Peas will be the Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm. The Black Eyed Peas will be the first musical act since the last “incident” that happened a few years back. On Feb. 6, 2011,  is when all of this will be going down….so be there or be square!

Yoha's Bible insight

I make New Year’s resolutions every New Year’s Day, and one thing that I always include in my resolution list is reading the Bible. Since starting from the Old Testament, which has Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, has a greater chance for me to fail because it is kind of boring, I decided to start from the New Testament.

As I was reading Mark 9 last night, I remembered Mr. Sunday’s sermon a few weeks ago. The title of the sermon was “How believers battle unbelief.” He included the story from Matthew 17:20 when Jesus heals a boy with an unclean spirit. In the passage, the disciples fail to heal the child because of their little faith. The fact that the boy can’t be healed disappoints the reader because in the previous chapter Peter was confessing Jesus as the Christ.

Where does our unbelief come from? Whenever people feel that they are bigger than God, unbelief comes along. We always confess that we will bring everything to God, put everything in His hands, and believe that He is with us. However, many times when we encounter a crucial moment, we tend to forget about Him. When a challenge comes, our faith is left behind as we try to look for a solution by ourselves within our reason. This is because we are living in the 21st century with many scientific technologies, so even though we think we believe Him, deep inside, we do not believe His supernatural capacity. But, we need to understand that God is with us and is all powerful. We should not be proud of ourselves but should constantly pray for our faith just like the child's father asks Jesus to help his unbelief.

Mark 9:23 "All things are possible for one who believes."

Christina Aguilera Botches National Anthem

Super Bowl XLV unquestionably left the American public with something to talk about.

It all began with Christina Aguilera's highly memorable performance of the National Anthem. The song landed Aguilera in hundreds of headlines, but not for the reason one would most aspire. The singer's established career and previous experience at NBA games couldn't prevent the blatant lyric flop. Instead of "O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming" Christina sang "what so proudly we watched at the twilight's last gleaming."

The disastrous blunder, was followed by a more respectable "rocket's red glare," but unfortunately the patriotic atrocity had already been committed. One source said, "A hush fell over the stadium and everyone was looking at each other."

The error was quickly detected and spread by fans not only in the stands but at home (thank you, twitter). After the Star Spangled Banner Aguilera headed backstage and was "devastated." "She knows she messed up big time. It's an honor to be asked, and she let America and herself down. She didn't want anyone around her. Everyone was telling her she was great, but she knows the truth,” says the source.

“I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through,” she told the Associated Press in a statement.

Luckily for Aguilera, the American public has the publicity attention span of no more than a week. This “disastrous” slip-up will in due time be forgotten and society can move on to discussing the Black Eyed Peas half-time show.

Sparknotes and Students

Sparknotes is a popular site that allows students to look up general information from a long list of books that are used often in assignments for students of all ages.

However, Sparknotes is a double-edged sword. It is capable of being very helpful to diligent students who can use it to look over the general information to remind them of what they just read. On the same note, it also allows some students to slack off and not do all the work. One student, who for his/her own personal safety will remain unknown, says that he/she uses Sparknotes all the time. And that if it weren't for Sparknotes, he would actually have to do the required reading. He/she also added that "it is well with my soul."

In the end, the big question we have to ask is, do the pros of Sparknotes outweigh all the cons? And in the end, they just don't. If students have the option of doing less work over more work they will always choose the first. This will cause students to create bad work ethics, and eventually it will catch up with them.

Women's rights ignored worldwide

A recent study found that in Asia, women workers account for nearly 50 percent of agricultural production. Shockingly, most of these women go unpaid because of their gender.

The culture is different on each and every continent regarding gender. In the West, equality is something that the culture prides itself on, but unfortunately the rest of the world hasn’t followed the example.  Most women in other societies are underprivileged, underpaid, and maltreated. Because of culture in current societies women don’t have anyone to reach out to and no one to demand fair treatment from. All around the world women aren’t allowed to keep their children, work for pay, or allowed proper necessities for life and the maintenance of their families; because of their gender. Why should women be deprived of doing things or making choices that would better society and the lives of billions on all continents?

As a heavily influential part of society, Americans should stand up to make a difference so that women and young girls around the world can live in peace and equality.

Civil Unions Approved In Illinois

On Jan. 31, 2011, Illinois became the sixth state to legalize civil unions and domestic partnerships for gay and lesbian couples after Governor Pat Quinn passed the Illinois Religious Freedom and Protection and Civil Union Act, making Civil Unions available for same-sex couples in Illinois.

Civil unions are legal contracts between gay and lesbian partners that offer some of the same rights and responsibilities as marriage, but only at a state level. The new law provides formerly unavailable rights to homosexual couples. These rights that will go into effect on June 1 include joint parental rights of children or joint adoption, status as “next-of-kin” for hospital visits and medical decisions, social security, Medicare, joint insurance plans, and many other benefits.

"Illinois is taking an historic step forward in embracing fairness and extending basic dignity to all couples in our state. We commend Governor Quinn for signing this bill," said John Knight, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Project of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) of Illinois.

Illinois citizens also approve this new bill, according to a Chicago Tribune poll last September. Fifty-seven percent of respondents approved the legalization of civil unions while 32 percent did not. With the Civil Union officially passed, many wonder if legalizing gay marriage soon to follow. Regardless of the next steps or what the future may hold for homosexual couples, Illinois’s act has recognizably made its mark in history.

Taco Bell goes to court

The federal court of California filed a lawsuit against Taco Bell for allegedly not having enough meat in their beef recipe. The court claims that the recipe only calls for 35 percent real beef and the rest of the mixture is seasoning and preservatives. They say that the combination isn’t healthy to feed to people. Taco Bell, however, has fought back and claims in their “Thank you for Suing Us” campaign that their meat is 88 percent beef and only 12 percent seasoning.

In the “Thank you for Suing Us” campaign, Taco Bell reveals the beef’s entire recipe. Revealing this information doesn’t seem like the kind of thing that a company would do if it had something to hide. Taco Bell is being very open and honest about everything, which seems to be the behavior of a confident corporation. Along with the company’s confidence, they claim that the beef has had the same recipe since the first day that they opened. And since there have not been any health problems involving the meat in all those years, the concern that the beef isn’t healthy to feed people has no grounds. Even if the California federal court were right, they have no way to really prove it, and, clearly, it’s not an issue to the public. California needs to focus on bigger issues. Taco Bell is probably one of the healthiest fast food restaurants in the United States (as far as “healthy” can go in a fast food joint). If anything, Burger King should be checked out because there is no way that their meat is real or half okay to eat.

A “Re-stock” in Economics

On Monday, Jan. 31, Mr. Huddleston announced something to his economics classes that made some excited, but others upset.

Over the course of this semester, the students in Economics have been playing a stock market game online called Simustock. This game involves buying and selling realistic stock shares without using real money. The game had been going relatively well, with about half the class in the positives, while the rest of the teams were losing money. One team in particular, GoldDiggers4, was winning by a long shot. Why? They were beating the system of the game by day trading. This means that they had chosen stocks each week based on how they were doing that day, rather than having them already picked out before the stock market opened.

Mr. Huddleston figured that this probably wasn’t the fairest way of playing the game, so he made the decision to start the game over. After about one month of playing Simustock, every team will start over with the same amount of money. Mr. H. has changed the rules a little bit as well. Now instead of choosing stocks in class, economics students are required to come to school with their stocks already picked out.

Overall, this isn’t a bad thing. Of course, some teams are probably frustrated if they were already ahead, but now everyone gets a completely fair shot.

Lemonade

Lemonade is the drink of America and of summer. Everybody drinks it: kids, adults, rich and poor. It is the start of business for little kids during the summer and an enjoyment for adults at summer parties with Mike’s Hard Lemonade. When you think of lemonade, you think of summer, and a cool refreshing drink.

The real challenge, though, is trying to find the best lemonade in the area. It has to have the best combination of sweetness and tartness.  Personally, I find the best is found at Pinstripes because it is so tasty and very delicious beyond human comprehension. I encourage you all to try it when we go there in March for Sadies!
A way to drink your lemonade without all the tartness is by adding tasty berries such as strawberries and raspberries. Red Robin is a good place to find good strawberry lemonade and its bottomless. Another great adaption to lemonade is the Arnold Palmer, which is half iced tea and half lemonade; it is a classy and scrumptious delight. If you’re short on money you can order water with some lemons and add some sugar packets to it.

Prom Dresses

Prom--it seems so far away doesn’t it?  But for a lot of girls, the search for the perfect dress has already begun.

Stores are filling up with dresses of every size, style, and color.  I myself have my dress and shoes already, but that is because it is the dress my sister wore for her senior prom.  From what I have seen when shopping with friends, bright colors are very much in this year.  Also there are a lot of dresses with low backs.  I have also noticed that one shoulder or strappless dresses are once again dominating the selection.  There are great choices in either long or short dresses.  So whichever you choose to get you will be able to choose from a wide variety.

Dresses are already going fast so you might want to get out there and start looking for your perfect prom dress.

The Egyptian Crisis

Cairo, Egypt – The tumultuous nation of Egypt has come to a violent climax in its struggle between the Mubarak regime and its protesters. The political environment of the nation has been nothing short of hostile.

In the nation’s capital, Cairo, riots have erupted and resulted in the loss of eleven lives. Just in these past few days, journalists seeking to spread light on the horrors have been captured, imprisoned, and sometimes beaten. It is clear that this country is in dire need.

Yet this tragic instability did not come about overnight. President Hosni Mubarak has been the leader of Egypt since 1981 and is currently eighty-two years old. Since his installation, particularly in the past 10 years, the political and economic health of Egypt has been fading. Due to the President’s seeming allowance of the nation to stagnate, Egypt has slowly spiraled downwards into the conditions we witness today. What the people of Egypt are now demanding is not far from what the citizens of the United States asked for two years ago – change. Yet the people of Egypt are taking a much more aggressive approach in rebelling against the present government. Protesters are gathering by the hundreds of thousands to fight for their victory.
However, therein lies the problem. These protesters do not represent one united front, all seeking to abolish the government and to establish freedom and democracy. There are, no doubt, some that desire such results. No, these protesters consist of dozens, if not hundreds of different organizations, factions, and extremist groups. In this way, the protesters are not only fighting against the current system, but also against each other.

This is a cause of great anxiety not only for the rioters, but for the whole world. The government of the most populous nation in the Middle East is “up for grabs,” so to speak, and it could very easily fall into the wrong hands. The main concern in this regard is the Muslim Brotherhood – a group known for having terrorist ties and suspected as the main inciter for the violence happening in Egypt right now. If the country falls into the hands of this group, it will without a doubt have an ill-effect on not only the Middle East, but the entire world.
In this extremely unstable period in Egypt’s history, it is crucial that democracy and freedom be ensured. I believe that the United States should be directly involved in the establishment of a new government in this crumbling nation.
Let us not forget to keep the nation of Egypt, as well as the surrounding regions in our prayers at all times.

Ode to Josh

Joshua Palmer, what an amazing name.
A grand old fellow, surely destined for fame.
With some real classy glasses,
And a voice to entertain the masses.
You wish to navigate the world in grand fashion,
I just asked you, you say it’s your passion.
Senior year is nearly over,
Yet meeting you was as lucky as finding a four-leaf clover.
I see you in math, every eighth hour.
You’re kindness and generosity remind me of a flower.
In class, you sit to my right,
Your sense of style is quite alright.
Hopefully you read this at night,
and think “Wow, this kid’s rhymes are wicked tight”
So to end this in a great way,
I say “I bid you farewell, have a nice day”
Stay gold, pony boy,
and bring the world much needed joy.
