My Year in Review

Where to start? How about August 19th, 2010. A mere week before starting another mindless year at Harry D. Jacobs High School. In my backyard, I had just convinced my parents to let me transfer to Westminster Christian School.  The year started, and I was immediately immersed in this vibrant student body. I made new friends and improved relationships with old ones. My absolute favorite part of the year was the teachers. They are so much more involved with the students here than at Jacobs. They care for the students and I have never been friends with teachers until now. Another thing that I loved about this year is baseball. The team is great, and we really work well together. Nobody fights, and the school shows a lot of spirit at our games. So there, that was my year in review.

My year

My junior year of high school has been exceptionally interesting. I began my junior year at Hampshire High School. It was terrible, to say the least. So my wonder mommy found WCS and I fell in love with the teachers and students. Soon, I became part of the community.
The teachers think that I ended up fitting in very well. Not the case. Sure, people liked me but I didn’t actually have any real friendships until the end of third term. Now, I’m friends with everyone, minus Tyler Greene… because we’re BEST friends.  J

The highlight of my year (besides coming to WCS, of course) was joining the Illinois Army National Guard. I have been wanting to be in the military since I was 12, and this summer, I’m going to basic training and finally chasing my dreams. I love everything about being in the Army. I truly feel that God has called me to be a soldier and I will live out His plan for me.

Anyways, I’ve had such a fabulous time at WCS. Everyone is so accepting of one another and people aren’t afraid to be their strange selves. I’m very sad that I won’t be able to return next year, but it has truly been such a gift to have the privilege of being here.

My Year By Andrew Mason

This last year in high school has been one of the best years of my life.  I was really looking forward to my senior year in high school and was going to make the most out of it.  The year started with me playing golf.  I really enjoyed playing on the team the past four years and really enjoyed all the friends I made from it.  Also, it helps when our coach, John Wedell, is a great coach and fun guy to be around.

The next fun thing that came along was homecoming.  I would say it was the best homecoming out of the three years I had gone to the dance.

Next up was our senior trip.  This was, without a doubt, one of the best experiences of my life.  It was great to get to know my classmates and teachers better.  Our class as a whole became more united through hanging out around the fire, playing paintball, the rock wall, and all the team building exercises that were done.

After senior trip was over with, it was time for my basketball season. Basketball is one of my favorite sports and I just had a fantastic time playing this year.  I played consistently well throughout it and our team set a school record for wins in a season.  It did not end the way I wanted it to, but it was still a great year.

After basketball came, of course, baseball season.  Last year our team went all the way and won the state championship.  This year we are playing well too.  We have had our ups and downs this year but we have came on strong at the end.  I love being with my teammates and friends that I will be friends with the rest of my life.  Our team has just won Regionals and we are hoping more victories are along the way.  Even if no more come, I am still proud of everyone and give all the glory to God.  Without him, none of this year would have turned out the way it has for me.  This year has truly been my year.

Beatrice's reflection on Anais

This year has come to an end and our darling seniors have left. One of the seniors that I will have a really hard time saying goodbye to is the lovely Anais Tabor. She is such an inspiration and I will miss her so much. Anais is just an all around sweetheart and always has words of wisdom to share. Our friendship started my freshman year when we both joined the cheerleading squad. It was both of our first years at Westminster so we could relate. We, along with the very much missed Alexa Scovel, had a great time and it was sad to see them both leave the cheerleading squad. Little did I know that our friendship wouldn’t stop there. It was sad to see her go, but Anais had much better plans because she was able to show her beautiful voice in plays and muscials. Anais is a person that does not have a problem sharing how she feels about anything. That is what I will miss the most. She always speaks what’s on her heart and I know that she will always be honest about anything. Anais always puts in her best and does everything to the glory of God. So, Anais...I told you that I would write this memoir to you because I am going to miss you so much so I’m going to leave you with some words of encouragement from our Heavenly Father! In Jeremiah 29:11, it says, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  My dear Anais, I am going to miss you so much and I will see you at graduation. I love you so much! Good luck in college. Have fun but not too much fun.

Taylor's year in review

This year was one of the most interesting years of my life. That being said, I hope what I write gives the memories I have the due justice they deserve. Wow, I have really built this up. Hopefully whoever reads it will be impressed. Hi, Mom. ANYWAY! I’m going to be completely honest about my experience here at Westy Minsty so hopefully I haven’t "ruffled any feathers" by the end of this.

To start out, I transferred from St.Charles North, a school that I have no words that are appropriate to say about. Transferring here was the most awesome thing that could have happened to me, so that being said (again remember I’m being honest), for some reason I forgot that I was still the new girl, so making friends would be rough. So the first month here for me was terrible. Now don’t scold me until you’ve read the rest of this, for about a month and a half it was pretty obvious everyone had made up their mind about me, so I figured my life was over and I was just going to muddle through. However, one incident brought me into a group of friends that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I can honestly say I have never felt so connected with a group of people that I would do (mostly) anything for.

That being said the rest of the year was great and looking on to senior year with the group of friends I have now, I’m pretty flippin’ excited. With Tyler Greene being one of my friends, how could I not be? HAHAAAHAAHAHAHHAHAHA just kidding, no need to build him up anymore (but he is a great guy..sometimes).

Well this is almost 300 words so that means I can stop and still get a substantial grade! So ya’ll come back, yah hear?!

My Year in Review

Senior year. Well, looking back it is pretty much a blur. I guess one could compare it to a roller coaster. It had its ups and downs, twists and turns, but in the end it went really fast and all you could do was hold on and enjoy the ride. The first day of school feels like a lifetime ago. I walked into school recognizing that everything I did would be my last.
One of the hardest “lasts” to deal with was the tradition of homecoming week. Realizing that this would be the last time I had the opportunity to participate in homecoming was bittersweet. I love becoming so close with my classmates, but I soon realized that in a few short months we would all be heading our separate ways. But, sadly, this year’s homecoming brought one of my lowest points. For the night before the anticipated homecoming dance I scratched my cornea on a tree branch. It was one of the most painful experiences, and although I tried to not let it effect my time, it did.

A few weeks after homecoming the seniors got to have an amazing experience together. Going to Tennessee for the weekend was by far one of the highest highs this year. Not only did it bond everyone together in ways I didn’t expect, but it also made me realize things about my classmates that I would have never known. Being able to spend so much concentrated time with my classmates made me feel all the more blessed to have known them and to call them friends.

The fall also brought another one of my lasts. This last, though, was one that was very hard to separate from. It was the end of the middle school musical Beauty and the Beast. It was very bittersweet for me. The kids that are involved in the middle school drama department have affected my life in many ways and it is hard to depart from them. But they are very special kids and I know God has a plan for each one of them.

The next step in my senior year was the high school play You Can’t Take it with You. I was so excited for this production, but there was a twist awaiting me that I was not expecting. A week into rehearsals I became ill with mono. In turn, I was out of practice and school for three weeks. Although it was hard to get caught up, it was not impossible. With only one week of practice I was able to perform during the first weekend of December.

The weekend of the play also brought with it one of the highlights of my year. This was the strange and fantastic opportunity to meet Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow. It was such a random day, but I was so excited for that opportunity and to be able to experience it with the people I did.

Over Christmas break I was able to attend the missions trip to the Dominican Republic. This can be defined as one of the influential times of my life. Being able to grow closer to my peers, teachers, and God in that environment was truly an unforgettable experience.

The second semester also brought some lasts. These include the last middle school play and Sadies. But one of the biggest ones was prom. After three years of attending prom, I am glad I had the opportunity to go to this one. It was such a great experience to hang out with all my friends and enjoy such a fun and exciting night with such an amazing view.

The biggest event of the year for me and one of the most exciting was The Phantom of the Opera. For the past five years I have watched the Westminster drama department grow into what it is today. To be able to experience the heightened expectations for this musical was insane. I am so proud that I had the ability to be apart of such an amazing production and to help the future of the Drama Department raise the bar for those who are to come.

My senior year at Westminster Christian High School will be one that I will never forget. It has been an amazing time of growth. I would not trade anything for the experience I was able to have.

Phantom of the Opera Review

“Wildly my mind beats against you, yet my soul obeys.” A quote said by Phantom in the very famous musical Phantom of the Opera, which is about a “disfigured” musical genius who hides in the opera house and trains his student and lover Christine.
It is no surprise that when it comes to plays and musicals, Westminster Christian is just amazing. But they really out did themselves this time with the musical, Phantom of the Opera. This remake originally done by Andrew Lloyd Webber was done spectacularly. The audience was blown away by all of the cast members acting, and of course singing. Many could not believe that these were the same students that we go to school with every day. Although this might sound strange, many of the girl students said that they had and I quote “feelings for Jimmy that I just cannot decipher.” I would just like to point out the fact that Jimmy Chapman did an amazing job playing Phantom as did all of the other cast members. True hard work was shown during the musical. I know I could tell that everyone put in such a good effort and it definitely showed in the performance. The costumes were amazing as well. Everyone looked amazing! The belly dancers looked “hawt.” I also want to give a “shout out” to Ms. Shloss who did an excellent job with hair and makeup like she usually does. Go Ms. S!! All of the actors and actresses should be very proud of their work. Great job everyone!

Sarah's end of year reflection

This year did not turn out quite in the way that I had planned. After a trying junior year, I had basically wanted to get out as soon as possible. Because of this, when senior year started I was shocked to find that I was actually enjoying myself. Through the senior trip, and day to day activities with friends, I started strengthening my relationships and really started to want to come to school each day. Now it is the end of the year and I'm struggling with ending this chapter of my life. I feel as if I am not nearly ready to grow up and this change is scary. My year was exciting and trying, funny and sad. I will never forget the friends I have made during this year and the things I learned. From how to defend my faith, to how to integrate an equation, to how to speak in public, I have gained skills through this school that I am incredibly grateful for.
As I reflect on this year I'm sure I could think of some things that I would do differently, but that is not the point. The point is that this school has shaped who I am today, and I am very grateful for that.

Anais's reflection

This year has been spectacular, unbelievable, unforgettable, and undeniably fun. The last few weeks were filled with loads of work. Not just homework from classes, but work from the musical Phantom of the Opera. Now that there are two days of school left, the worries wander to college plans and summer jobs. As I sit back and look at the year I have nothing to say other than I have no regrets and I had the honor of getting to know the many different kinds of people in our class. I grew closer to people I hadn’t had the opportunity to get to know in previous years and I had the honor of getting to know some of my teachers better. Through the opportunities that presented themselves I grew closer to the faculty, the students, and most importantly God. I found out what my strengths are, just as well as my weaknesses. I appreciated the environment of Westminster before, but I know that once I go off to college I’m going to appreciate it even more. Westminster has, with the three years I’ve been here, taught me valuable life lessons and I know that I will never forget them or under appreciate them. My high school experience has been a fun ride and I will never forget what this school has provided me with.

Josh's journalism year in review

My journalism year consisted of a lot of writing and layout designing. As I learned the layout program indesign, my skills with putting articles, pictures, and designs into the paper greatly improved. I liked doing layout design, but the order of events going from writer, to multiple editors, to me as the layout editor didn't always function as intended. I discovered for myself that I liked writing a lot more than I had originally thought. I would gladly be an editor, writer, or even layout editor for the college(s) I will be attending in the future.
Sometimes the layout was frustrating, but other times it was rewarding. Overall, I enjoyed writing the most. When I was writing about topics I personally appreciated, I usually would put a lot of personal work into it. I thought most of my articles, whether they were blog articles or newspaper articles were generally relevant and fun to write about. In general, I really do think I improved my writing, especially from a journalistic perspective.

I would take journalism again, especially if some things were to change. The first of these things would be a new system of article circulation. Also, while you can’t always change the enthusiasm of the students, it would be nice to have a group of students that all like to write.

Brittany's year in review

Out of all the classes I took this year, Journalism was probably one of my favorites. Despite blowing off the class period and doing nothing most of the time, I was actually able to learn a lot about writing. Before this class I was only familiar with the usual essay style of writing that we normally use in school. However, writing articles for a newspaper made me better and more familiar with the style of writing that real journalists use.

I am glad that I took Journalism class for many reasons. One big reason is that I got to write about what I wanted to write about for the newspaper and have other people actually read it. This made me feel like I had more of a voice in our school; I was able to write to my peers. Secondly, by writing about things like school news, world news, and sports, I was able to stay updated with what had been going on in these areas. It’s important to be well-educated about the current news around us. Finally, if you want another great thing to put on a college resume, Journalism will be an impressive addition.

Overall, this class was absolutely not a waste of time, but rather a great opportunity for me. If you get the chance to take this class next year, I would recommend it!

Mo's year in review

This year can be explained with a few words, emotional, fun, and life changing. This 2010-2011 school year was my senior and final year at Westminster which in turn made me sad, anxious, and nervous about the year ending. Leaving behind great friends that I have grown close to since I first came to WCS in fifth grade is sad. But the fast approaching unknown future is also very exciting. This mix of emotions made this year difficult. However, this year was also very fun. Being able to appreciate my friends more made me cherish the times we had together, making this year more relaxed and fun. Along with this, many events such as, Homecoming, the missions trip, Sadies, Prom, and Phantom of the Opera made this year exciting and one to remember. This year was also life changing, as it was one to look back at how I have grown but also a time to look forward at the future and what God may have in store for my life. The mission’s trip to the Dominican Republic along with Dr. Marsh’s class, Understanding the Times, also helped change my life in tremendous ways. The missions trip helped me grow in my relationship with Christ, along with build relationships with others, all while experiencing a new culture and helping others. Dr. Marsh’s class also helped me because it challenged my faith and helped me further grow in my walk with God. Altogether my senior year was one that will never be forgotten, the relationships I have developed and the amazing memories I made will ones that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Westminster Boys' Volleyball Season-- A Promising Future

Westminster Boys’ Volleyball Season: A Promising Future

Westminster Christian started off their guys’ volleyball season a little uneasy this year considering they almost did not have a team.  This year was the Warriors third year for guys’ volleyball and starting off the season with barely enough players was troubling to many of the players.
Last year, the majority of the team was seniors.  Therefore, having them graduate caused a need for lower classmen to join the team.  Luckily for the team, they finally had enough players to compete.  The players even welcomed a new coach, Mr. Landers.  A basketball coach, math teacher, and now volleyball coach for Westminster Christian School.
The Warrior boys’ volleyball season did not start off easy, but rather quite challenging.  One player stated, “Well, it (the season) started off being kind of difficult during games.  This was mainly because it took a long time for us to learn how to work as a team.”
However, this year’s team was different than any previous team.  Another player remarked, “We have had good teams in years past but I think what separates us this year from years past is our bond. We are like brothers to each other and that’s really cool. We’re a new team, with not much experience, but that will come in time and I think we have a great future ahead of us. I think it’s great that we can be the founders and the beginning of an exciting new sport for Westminster and I hope it will thrive in years to come.”  And their team truly did become closer and as they became more focused on volleyball they became a better team.  A player said, “But later in the season we started doing better once we started to figure things out.”
For those who are thinking of playing but are unsure about playing, players have a few words to say.  One player suggests, “My advice to people thinking about playing would be just do it.  I signed up a couple weeks into the season because I wasn’t sure f I wanted to play and I wish I signed up earlier.  Another player adds, “Don’t be afraid to try something new, even if you think you’re not good enough or would just burden the team, that’s not true we all have to start somewhere but for me most importantly it’s to just have fun and to glorify God.”  So, if you are thinking about playing, even if you aren’t sure, go for it.
Boys’ volleyball has a promising future.  Many players would like to see the program grow and perhaps have two teams, such as Junior Varsity and Varsity.  With the promise of new players joining and old players returning, the boy’s volleyball team should continue to grow in the years to come.

First U.S. Full-Face Transplant

Dallas Wiens is the first person to have a full face transplant in the United States Dallas Wiens is a 26-year old-father and could not be happier.
Back in November 2008, Wiens burned the majority of his face when he leaned against an electrical wire while working in a cherry picker.  The electrical wire destroyed his nose and lips.  It also blinded him.  The accident caused Wiens to lose his left eye and has no light perception in his right eye.
Even though he feels numb in some areas on his face, he remarked that it felt like a completely natural face.  When he was reunited with his 3-year-old daughter after the surgery she exclaimed how handsome he looked.  After all, she was the reason that he decided to get the full face transplant.  According to nypost.com Dallas Wiens said, “I could have lived like I was, no problem, if I did not have my daughter.  But I could not bear the thought of her growing up and being asked questions, ‘Why does your daddy look different?’ And dealing with that all of her childhood.”
The donor was completely anonymous, but Dallas is  truly grateful.  He considers the transplant an amazing gift.  He talked about how he was losing his sense of smell before the surgery and when he could smell again.  Wiens remarked, “The ability to breathe through my nose normally, that in itself was a major gift.”
Even though doctors say he still needs to regain some nerve and muscle function, Wiens’ future looks promising.   Dallas Wiens is taking into consideration university education and he and his daughter look forward to the life ahead they have together.

The Adler Planetarium

Through the end of this month of May, the Adler Planetarium – one of the most famous planetariums in the world, located in our very own city of Chicago – is offering free entrance to anyone who accomplishes a specific task. Through the Zooniverse.com website you can discover the means by which you can receive free entrance. The site specializes in the classification of galaxies and puts it to you – the public – to classify them. This process is not nearly as intimidating as it sounds. The website’s user-friendly interface and tools make this a simple and fun task. Specifically what the site requires is that you classify at least ten galaxies within the Milky Way Project. This is done by utilizing the tools to essentially identify and measure galaxies. Although this may take some concentration, this is a fun challenge to anyone interested in astronomy or who enjoys learning about the expanses of our great universe (or universes). This task most definitely has its rewards and is worthwhile. The Adler Planetarium is very highly acclaimed by many of the most prestigious institutes. From its lenses you can see to the brim of our galaxy and beyond. The countless stars, planets, satellites, and perhaps even other space oddities would come to life as the high-powered telescopes allow you to experience the far reaches of our universe. So do not let this opportunity to slip through your fingers. Take advantage of the chance to see our universe through new eyes! Just follow the directions on this site -http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fblogs.zooniverse.org%2Fmwp%2F2011%2F03%2F15%2Ffree-entry-to-the-adler-planetarium%2F&h=aeb0dzR2ZabzjfIho9fhQzNXMlg - and receive free admition through the end of this month!

The Mocking Clock

Oh, that dark night, while I thought and hoped for light.
For the candle was dim, and my soul all the dimmer.
As my broken heart, once whole, beat slowly on and on,
I heard the tick of a clock thought long dead.
The clock had died, the day he lie, down for the final rest.
Yet the clock ticked on and on it did, in a mocking tone of dread.
The ticking matched the slow beating of this broken heart of mine.
It made me think back in time.
Oh, the dreams we have I would say, and in whisper he would respond,
Listen to the clock he would say, the time is ours, those dreams will carry on.
With every tick, and every tock, the clock would mock.
The time is ours, the time is ours, well time is gone today.
As the clock stopped ticking once again, I sighed my last.
Our time has started once again.

MattRach

Being an avid music lover I occasionally browse YouTube in search of new artists/bands that could satisfy my interest. While I was doing this, I heard one of MattRach’s songs through some random video clicking and I have never stopped listening since.  MattRach is the alias of this young French whose real name is Mathieu Rachmajda. He became known on the Internet from his videos on YouTube performing his own unique arrangements. His arrangements include Dark Paradise, The Conquistador, as well as covers of songs by Steve Vai, and classical pieces such as Canon Rock (My favorite, a cover of JerryC’s Canon Rock - an arrangement of Canon in D by Pachelbel) and Amadeus Rock.  His YouTube channel has received over 70 million views, which makes it one of the most subscribed channels in France. Globally MattRach has more subscribers than Madonna, Just saying. MattRach is currently involved in a band project known as MattRach & Play. The band consists of Mathieu Rachmajda (Guitar), Sebastien Guenard (Keyboard/Vocal /Saxophone /Harmonica), Nicolas Guenard (Bass) and Olivier Guenard (Drums/Percussion). Their debut album Mister Jack was released on May 24th 2010. Although I do not care for most of the songs his band puts out I do listen to them but only to hear MattRach play. The fact that someone could be that talented just blows my mind. I have not listened to him in a while and now that I have come back to him I have noticed that in fact he has gotten significantly better over the four years I have watched his videos. Now only that but if you watch his first video and compare it to the most recent one you can see a significant change in his character and countenance, he has really matured over the years. If you ever have a chance just look up “Cannon Rock Final” on YouTube and prepare to be amazed!

Track Season Wrap-up

As the school year comes to a close, so do many spring sports—particularly  track. This spring has been an exceptionally great track season for the Westminster Warriors. With the coaching help of Coach Cochran and Coach Ron, the track team has grown and reached new levels. It is no doubt that everyone on the team has been able to become better athletes throughout the season.
Although the season has been relatively short this year, there have been many good times indeed. At the beginning, most of the team was able to bond through fun activities like laser-tag. We were even brought closer together (literally) during freezing cold track meets in which blankets were shared while people huddled together. Overall, I’m pretty sure that most of us would even consider the team to have a family-like environment.
With girls’ sectionals being on Friday and the boys’ next week, the track season is unfortunately almost over. The sectional meet is not necessarily the end though. If any girls or guys do well enough in their next meet, they will be able to travel down state to compete for one last time this year. You can show your support by coming to sectionals and please don’t forget to pray for our athletes.

Summer 2011

The 2010-2011 school year was amazing but let’s be honest, we can’t wait for it to end. The school year was filled with homework, papers, and of course the occasional “special event” such as: Race for education, homecoming, Sadies, and who could forget…PROM! But all good things have to end which leads us back to boring school. Although we are super excited to be out of school and hanging out with our friends for a whole three months, we still have a sense of sorrow when thinking about our seniors leaving our school forever. It is not only the seniors but we never know which students will not be coming back. But what could be better than having a blast with our friends before they go. Just think about soaking up the sun on the beach sipping lemonade. Oh yea! Sounds like a party, no better yet sounds like an amazing summer day! Nothing could be better than getting your tan on, at the beach with your friends. Just thinking about all of the amazing things that we can do during the summer just gets me so pumped for the next three months of my life. Nothing could be worse than these last two weeks of school when the days go by so slowly. It’s almost as if school just doesn’t want us to leave and makes the clocks go slower. As soon as these few weeks are over, and we get over the dreadful FINALS that we will hopefully pass, we can enjoy our summer with ease. We’ll have no worries and get to live each day to the fullest :)) AND most importantly us juniors will be the future SENIORS!! Everyone, get out your sunscreen and swimsuits and let’s get ready for summer!

It's Time to Review Autism Awareness

Autism rates are getting higher throughout time. In South Korea, one in every thirty-eight children develop autism spectrum disorder. Scientists concluded that as of this past Sunday a rate of 2.64% South Korean children are found with autism, along with an estimated rate of one in one hundred and ten children for the United States, (concluded by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
This study made differs from others in that in previous studies, researchers mainly used special education classes instead of the cities' populations. This time the Koreans analyzed over 55,000 children, between the ages of seven and twelve.
Asperger's disease now has a possibility of being a form of autism. Yet these two disorders differ in that of autism comes with significant delays in language and cognitive development. However, researchers say that it is impossible to draw a distinct line between the two and that Asperger's is autism.
Students at this school have their own views on autism:
"People need to be more aware of austism.  People need to realize that people with autism are no different than we are.  My cousin has Asperger's disease yet he gets along with me and my other cousins fine, he acts no different than we do.  Just because someone has a disease or disorder, it does not define them as a person."
"I've noticed throughout my experiences with autistic people is that they are very smart especially when it come to memorizing patterns. It seems like most autistic people have an obsession with one specific thing and focus a lot of their attention on it. It's actually very interesting."
"My mom has been working with people who have disorders. She has taught a religion class during the school year once a week for the past twenty five years. When I was little I used to be afraid of them, but now I have a much better understanding, especially having worked with them face-to-face. In reality, they are just like us. They need to be understood and it is in our hearts to do so since we are all children of God."

International reaction to Osama's death.

As we all know, the U.S. Navy Seals took out Osama Bin Laden in an extremely secretive operation nearly two weeks ago. It was quite clear that the reaction from the United States was a positive one. People enjoy the justice of such a dark and reprehensible person. Osama Bin Laden was known around the world as a huge figurehead for terrorism.

Even though the reaction in the United States was a positive one, not all people were rejoicing at the death, even if he was a head figure for one of the most recognizable terrorist organizations, al-Qaeda. While many nations didn't like the 'rejoicing' in a death, it is true that nearly all allying nations were glad that justice was served.

Saad Hariri, Lebonon's prime minister was quoted, "The history of our nationalism and Islam will never forgive that man who was a black mark for two decades, filling the minds of youngsters with ideas about terrorism, murder and destruction." Likewise, German chancellor, Angela Merkel was quoted as saying, "Last night the forces of peace achieved a victory. But this does not mean that international terrorism has
been defeated yet. We must all remain vigilant."

However, along with the media from other countries and even some leaders, people were not keen on people's seemingly praise of a death. Elias Jaua, president of Venezuela, was among leaders that questioned the rejoicing of a death, "I believe that in the first place it is an ethical question from the human point of view to celebrate death as an instrument of resolution of a problem." Along with this, popularity among Germany's citizens for the celebration of the death of even a terrorist was low. In a poll, around 64 percent were dismayed by the remarks their chancellor gave surrounding the death of Bin Laden. While they don't disagree that justice was served, they, along with many other people, even some from the United States don't like the idea of celebrating a death, even if the death was the figure head of terrorist organization.

Korver

The Bull’s are one of the best in the NBA and have one of the deepest benches with about 9 – 10 players that get minutes every game. One of these players that come off the bench to do work is Kyle Korver who knocks 3’s down like nobody’s business. He is in the top 50 in the NBA for the season for his 3 point percentage with .415 and is the top 10 for 3 point percentage in playoffs with .486. Korver is what your typical shooter looks like and has the background you might think he would have, by being a white boy from the state of Iowa. Although he isn’t as good as Ray Allen he does know how to knock down 3’s when he is needed. Also, he has had his struggles in some games this year he is still the best 3 point shooting option that the Bulls have. Part of the problems which effect his shooting ability is that the Bulls try to use for too many other things besides shooting, that aren’t really his specialty, like pushing the ball up the court and running the offense every once in awhile. Instead of using him in things outside his expertise they need to use him for mostly one thing and that is shooting. He needs to be catching the ball off screens and knocking down his turnaround jumper that we bull fans love so much. If he focuses on this he will able to be a better and more consistent outside threat. Another thing he can do is when he isn’t coming off screens he should set up in the corner ready to receive the ball and shoot so that when rose driving he has an outlet option which will take pressure off himself and be another for the opposition to have deal with.

Prom Attire So Good It Belonged On A Boat

Westminster’s Prom took place on May 7. When people think of prom, thoughts often drift towards the dinner, dancing, and attire. The third factor maintains a particular appeal to the girls that plan on attending their prom (or just girls in general for that matter). Westminster Christian has not been known for it’s over the top apparel in the past. Of course the ladies always look lovely, but “froo-froos” and poofs usually aren’t the general attraction. The dresses this year perhaps can be defined as elegant and classy. The one shoulder dress didn’t seem as popular as last year, but nonetheless were worn by a decent portion. Styles ranged from mermaid and fitted to dresses that flowed. Some girls went with the vintage look, adding an extra flare. Because the event took place on a boat at Navy Pier, girls had to be prepared for walking and being outside more than usual. Many brought shawls and shrugs for the walk from the bus to the boat. Not all the girls were so lucky to think of such outerwear, but when all else failed there was the date with 18 layers who gladly donated his jacket.  The men, of course, will not be neglected in this year’s “fashion analysis.” Although the attire for men maintains somewhat less of a variation, they had their own personal touches. Various, as custom, matched the tie (or bow tie) to the color of their date’s dress. Others picked colors that complimented their dates dress. Most chose the tie but a select few decided to live large and bow tie it up. The more resourceful gentlemen chose to break free of the grasps of tuxedo normality and instead buy a suit. This alternative proved to be more cost efficient and practical. Needless to say, everyone looked elegant and handsome. But what will be most remembered is not the fashion but the fellowship amongst peers.

Justin Bieber Egged in Australia

There is no doubt that Justin Bieber has many crazed fans and followers. These fans are better known to many as ‘Beliebers.’  However, there are definitely several non-Beliebers which was made clear at a concert the 17-year-old singer performed in Sydney, Australia.
While the singer was performing a handful of eggs (reportedly six) fell from above and landed at his feet.  However, Justin did not let a few eggs ruin his concert.  He simply took a step back and continued with his dancing and singing.
Many fans wanted the person that egged Justin Bieber to receive justice, or simply be caught.  Well, to these fans enjoyment authorities found and arrested the young 17-year-old boy.  Many people were confused to why the boy would pay for tickets to see a singer he disliked, just to egg him.  Well, according to reports he did not buy tickets and did not even attend the concert.  Apparently the boy broke into the Acer Arena’s roof and egged him from above.  However, the boy’s plans failed because not one of the eggs hit Justin Bieber.  The boy was arrested at his house and was charged with breaking and entering, trespassing, and damage according to an Australian newspaper.  Since he is a minor, his identity was not allowed to be released.
Although Justin Bieber has had many supportive and wonderful fans there have always been some people that do not like him or his music and will do anything to ruin or humiliate him.  Whether it’s giving death threats to his girlfriend or egging him, Justin Bieber has pulled through it all and has not given up on living his dream.

Special Olympics

The Special Olympics! Those words don’t appear in our vocabulary too often. In reality the Olympics were a huge hit and had more than 600 athletes participate. They ranged from the west to the south suburbs. The “Olympics” took place on Sunday May 1st. The competitors did a range of different track and lifting events. Everyone gathered at North Central College for this magnificent event. It really gave all of the people a chance to do what they love. The day went along just like any other Olympic would. They started it off with a torch run with a bunch of the athletes running. Everyone’s spirits were high with excitement in high hopes that there would be a great event following shortly. “The Special Olympics and events like it improve athletes’ self-esteem and help connect them with other classmates.” Said Kate Hamann, the coach of the Spring Games team. Those athletes who placed in Gold can advance to the Illinois State Summer Games which will be on June 10th through the 12th at none other than Illinois State University. There will most likely be more than 35000 athletes participating. Many of the athletes did an amazing job. All of the athletes and their families feel that it's such a good thing that they are able to step out of their box and show everyone what they really love to do. The coach of the team Sandy Lowder says “I’m such a believer in what Special Olympics does. You look out here and see all the positive reinforcement these kids are getting.” We are looking forward to the Summer Games!

Cinco De Mayo

It's that time of year again-- the spring event of the year got its party on!
TacoTime had a deal for their tacos! They were only 59 cents! WOOO! Who doesn't love tacos?!
Sales were everywhere as Mexican restaurants and citizens all around celebrated the Mexican independence day, which ironically is in September.
Live music, arts and crafts, and much more was brought about to help in the celebrating. Streets were closed off, restaurants lowered, and people were gathering from all about.
Typically in the small town of Sycamore, Illinois, the Romero family owned restaurant Taxco presents a fiesta with local teenage bands, mariachi bands, traditional dancers, and food from their menu. There's also a moon-walk, face painting, a mini petting zoo, and local business such as Tails come to show off what they got. People of all ages come to this celebration. This year, the party was held on Sunday May 1st from noon till evening.
I have personally gone to a few of these "block parties" and had a blast. It is truly a good reason to reunite with old friends, get deliciously prepared Mexican food, and dance along to all different kinds of music. I have had a lot of food from Taxco and would definitely refer it to anyone who has never been there, and not just because I am good friends with the owner's daughter.
However, this day also brings up many debates on immigration, especially in Arizona. The heat is on as citizens everywhere recall that around this time last year the immigration law from Arizona came up.
Yet, many Mexican corporations and citizens have put it on the back of their list of things to worry about, relax, and party.

Prom 2011

Prom: a night that will be remembered as the closing to the year. Prom: a night that will be remembered as the last school social event before the seniors leave and go on with their lives beyond high school. Prom: a night full of dancing, food, and enjoying your classmates company. This past weekend the juniors and seniors of Westminster Christian school had the opportunity to go downtown Chicago to enjoy a night cruise. The 2011 Prom will go down in Westminster Prom history, the Proms to come have some very high standards to live up to. The food at was very delectable, and there were many options. There was barbeque beef brisket, garlic herb chicken, pasta with red sauce, sweet corn mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and bread rolls. The desserts were just as delectable and there were just as many options to choose from. The table settings and placements were perfect and the center pieces enchanting. And the dance floor, although very small, helped the students to bond and that in order for everyone to fit people needed to be rather considerate of space. The chaperones were superb and you could tell that the love for the student body was outrageous and that they truly desired to be a part of the celebration of the closing year. Seniors have said that, “this prom is better than any other.” That statement comes from a girl who’s gone to three total proms. The gowns were extravagant, the hair curled to perfection, the tuxes very sharp. Everything about the 2011 prom was wonderful and thoroughly enjoyed.

Physics Fright

Physics class - the terror of many students at Westminster Christian School. In the minds of many underclassmen, Physics is that giant beast, lurking around the corner of senior year, waiting to dissolve their brains in mathematical quandary.

Or at least this was how I had viewed it upon entry into the class. Physics seemed daunting to me. I had heard from several classmates who had taken it the year before that it was definitely a challenging class. But I decided to dive in, not knowing if it would all go over my head or not.
As it turns out, physics has been my favorite class of senior year. It has bent and stretched my mind to its utmost limits, teaching us about universal gravitation, different dimensions, and, the most fascinating to me, black holes. Many such as myself once pictured a black hole as a mysterious monster of the universe which, if entered, could transport you to other galaxies or parallel universes. Through the wonderful class that is physics, we learned that black holes a) are not endless b) cannot transport you to other universes (though multiple universes very well may exist) and c) they WILL kill you if you dare to wander close to their gravitational field of doom. Black holes are absolutely fascinating. And just wait till you hear about Space-Time. Your mind will melt.
All of this to say, TAKE PHYSICS! I am convinced that it is one of the best classes that Westminster has to offer. It is absolutely fascinating, and makes you think deeper and harder than many others. Though it has its challenges, do not let it scare you. I highly recommend it to all incoming juniors or seniors that are willing to put in the effort, and I hope to see you all in twenty years when I’ll be only one year older thanks to space-time. Boom.

The Irresistible Revolution

The book “The Irresistable Revolution:  Living Life as an Ordinary Radical,” is an amazing book.  It is about a man, Shane Claiborne, who realizes that he is unhappy with just going through the motions.  He was raised in the bible belt and church had become something that he just did because he was told it was the thing to do.  Churches used games and food to entice people to come to youth group.  He got tired of the fact that there was no passion, and he wanted to change things.  So he set out and he did exactly what he wanted, he started living life the way Jesus did.  He worked for the homeless, and he went to live and work with Mother Teresa for a year. I have not finished reading the book yet, in fact I am not even halfway through.  Yet this book is inspiring me in so many ways.  I have been struggling with my faith recently because I felt like all the passion and fire in it had just disappeared.  But this book has been showing me that if I want to find that passion again all I have to do is change how I am. I have to find something in my life that sparks that passion again.  All I have to do is start an irresistable revolution for myself.  Being a radical is just someone trying to get back to the root of things.  So this is exactly what I hope I will be able to do.  Live life like an ordinary radical.

iPods in Study Hall

At the begging of this year everyone was excited for the new school year. To meet new friends, experience their new classes, and begin the year with a clean slate. But there was one thing that no one could have expected the allowance iPods while in study hall. Everyone was ecstatic when they announced that we could use iPods in class because most everyone has iPods in this day in age. Study hall soon became a time to look forward to your favorite music if you were having a bad day. It also provided students an opportunity to escape from the stress of the day and relax for a period. Not only that but it allowed students to focus on their work and therefore be more productive. The ability to listen to iPods in study hall has created a more productive atmosphere for students and teachers. If someone is listening to their iPod then they are not talking to their neighbors. If they are not talking to their neighbors, then their neighbors are not talking to them and hence the study hall is much quieter. The only way that listening to iPods could cause a problem is if the person that is listening to it plays music too loud and whereby disturbing the rest of the study hall. Other than that the pros far outweigh the cons of having iPods in study hall. I have seen that iPods help the overall student body concentrate on their school work and therefore they are much more productive that if they had been talking to peers. With this being the first year they have let us use iPods in study hall, we could have either shown them we deserve to have iPods or that we are better without them. I think that we have sufficiently proven to the faculty that we deserve to listen to our iPods in study hall. Besides they might have a riot on their hands if they took away iPods in study hall. Just Saying.

Pope John Paul II Beautified

On Sunday May 1st Pope John Paul II was beautified in front of 1.5 million people in Rome. These numbers made it one of the largest crowds to ever witness an event similar to this. This event occurs when the Pope, in this case Pope Benedict XVI, approves a miracle attributed to a past Pope, who in this case is Pope John Paul II, clearing the way for the late pontiff’s beatification, the final step before sainthood. Beautification is the last major milestone a pope must go through before he can be declared a saint, so it can be understood that it is considered a pretty big deal in the church. However like in any major event there are many skeptics who believe that the Pope may not be worthy of being declared a saint. However Vatican officials insist that this process isn't a judgment on how John Paul administered the church but rather whether he lived a life of Christian virtue. This of course has been a big deal to Catholics all around the world. However when it comes to people of other religions, how should they feel? Should they care a lot that someone is being declared a good person? Or should they just accept that it is just words and in the end they can believe whatever they want. In the end, like with most stories, it is important for people who do not know a lot about the topic to research it from all angles before making a logically conclusion about it.

Sleeping on the job

New air traffic control crackdown led by the FAA has been imposed. Concerns from sleeping air traffic controllers have come after a plane Michelle Obama boarded had to abort its landing. It has been recently discovered that people have been napping while working their jobs. One controller was quoted, “I’d close my eyes for 15, 20 minutes and go back to work and feel 1,000 times better.” He was also noted saying that when people were seen doing it, other workers wouldn’t ask about it. Such restrictions such as a three-strike policy while caught sleeping are reportedly being enacted by their supervisors. Some of the controllers shifts require that they be alert and ready to work at odd hours. Shifts like this are hard to get used to, especially for newly trained air traffic controllers. The FAA hopes to improve this issue making sure the supervisors are imposing new rules in their control towers and cracking down on sleeping employees.

Bulls

The bulls surprised everyone this year by doing as well as they did and having the best record in the NBA during the regular season. Their record of 62 -20 is the same record they had the last time they won it all in the 97-98 season. Besides the team doing so well they also had a couple of members of the team receiving high NBA honors. Coach Tom Thibodeau received the Coach of the year award in his first year as a head coach in the league and turned a .500 team in to possibly the best team in the league. He is also the first bulls coach to receive this award since Phil Jackson in 1996. The other award won by a bull was the MVP which was awarded to the superstar point guard Derrick Rose. He is also the youngest ever to receive this award at the age of 22. No one from the bulls has received this award since Michael Jordan in the 95-96 season in which they won the championship. So with the coach of the year, the MVP, and a solid supporting cast the playoffs are looking pretty promising for the bulls. What doesn’t look to promising though is there performance thus far. They beat the Pacers in the series 4-1 but in about 3 of those wins the pacers were up the majority and the bulls made runs at the end. Also they lost the first game in their conference semi-finals series against the Atlanta Hawks 103-95 who were a 5 seed heading into playoffs knocking out the 4 seed Orlando Magic. If they want to get through this series and be a championship contending team they need to first put their best defender on Joe Johnson who scored 34 against them in the first game and also they need to have their shooters to step up their game with 3’s to open the drive up for Rose.

White Sox Secret Weapon

The White Sox were able to pull off a victory against the Yankees winning 3-2 on April 24, all thanks to one player who hasn’t been seen as much of a factor. This player is Brent Lillibridge who didn’t even start the game but came in as a pinch runner in the eighth inning while the sox were down 2-1 until Paul Konerko hit a home run to drive in Lillibridge and himself to put the sox up 3-2. But that is not even close to the effect Lillibridge had on this tough game against the yanks. In the ninth inning he was put in right field and made two amazing catches to practically win the game as a bench player. His catches were so good in fact that they were combined as the top play for ESPN that night. This guy can be the spark they need, but they are going to need more than a spark to catch up with the red hot Indians who are 6 games ahead and the royals who are about 2 games ahead but are starting to improve their offense more. It seems that Chicago baseball better heat up with the weather or this could be a long summer for Chicago fans, with both teams under .500 the White Sox at 10-19, and the Cubs at 12-15.These teams should be free from enraged fans until after the bulls are done with their playoffs. If I were the Sox or Cubs I would either get my act together quick or hope that the bulls win championship so that fans won’t get so mad. Also it could maybe give them momentum and Chicago could have a bunch of great sports and be feared in all sports maybe even the Fire too.

Westminster's Views of Bin Laden's Death

The recent announcement of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden's death has ignited mixed reactions amongst the American people. On May 1, 2011 current President Barack Obama announced that bin Laden had been shot dead in Pakistan. Spirited crowds gathered outside the White House and at Ground Zero to cheer the demise of the world's most wanted terrorist. Smoking cigars and breaking into chest-thumping chants of "USA! USA!" complimented the fireworks and dancing. But were the ecstatic reactions over the top considering the cause for the celebrations was the death of a human life?

The students of Westminster had their own opinions of the matter. The burning memory of our nation's attack on 9/11 was at least a feint recollection for most of the high school students.

Some students opinions are in regards to justice. Many students felt the excitement should revolve around the fact that justice had been served more so than happy to hear of the death. Others were pleased that we accomplished the goal we set out to do. God uses the government to enforce justice, even by means of killing. However, we should not be rejoicing over a death.

It is fair to say that overall the student body is thrilled that justice has been served, however most agree that to go as far as dancing in the streets over the killing of a human life is taking matters into the extreme.

Phantom of the Opera Rehearsals

This spring Westminster Christian High School is putting on the Tony award-winning production The Phantom of the Opera. Ever since February the cast has been hard at work, trying to prepare for the show. But as the performance day gets closer the practices have become more intense. Students have already been pushing themselves to their limit, but now they must push themselves a little further. Over the course of a few months there have been some very intense and special practices. Such as a rehearsal that took place on Monday night where the cast had the wonderful opportunity to practice singing along side the orchestra. With six hours of practice a night the pressure continues to build. Yet the cast has to be careful, for there are many threats when one pushes themselves that hard. So the cast and crew must now learn the balance between taking care of themselves and making sure to get those final practices in. All of this is important so they can give the community the best show possible.

Osama bin Laden

Osama bin Laden was finally located and killed after an intense game of hide and seek that lasted for a decade. The United States planned a surprise trip to Pakistan and found him on the upper story of a house where a Navy Seal shot him right in the face. The United States did not inform Pakistan of our visit fearing that they might tell bin Laden that the US troops were coming for him, which would in turn lead hit into hiding once again. It is amazing to think that most well trained people in the world were searching day and night for ten years for this man, and he managed to stay out of sight.
I guess it is a good thing that he is dead. It’s hard to say. Being in the service, it is made clear to us that we should never second guess a terrorist. Bin Laden killed thousands of people. It is absolutely sickening to even comprehend how many lives were taken because of him. The world is a much safer place now that he is no longer a part of it. But at the same time, I’m not about to get up and party that a human life is gone.  People seem to be going unnecessarily crazy about it, but many of them are celebrating for the wrong reason: revenge. That is kind of horrible. They are happy that he is dead because he “got what was coming to him.” I did not personally lose a loved one in the 9/11 attack, so I guess I really don’t have a say in it, but we all have to understand that bin Laden was psychotic. He actually thought that he was doing a good deed for the world in every time he blew something up. He was an evil man and justice is now served; that’s about all there is to say.

Inmate punches officer

A 26-year-old Yuma man waiting to be released from the Pinal County Adult Detention Center attacked a guard last week in order to remain in custody, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday. Alexandro Guerrero told authorities that he was afraid the drug cartels were going to kill him when released, leading him to attack a detention officer, said sheriff's spokesman Tim Gaffney. Guerrero claimed he used to sell drugs to make money and got involved with a drug cartel in Mexico called Los Zetas, the sheriff's spokesman said. At some point, Guerrero said the cartel labeled him as a snitch after learning he was leaking information about the gang to an unspecified law- enforcement agency. Guerrero told officers the cartel put a “hit” on him to be killed.
While waiting to be released April 17 Guerrero punched a detention officer in the face, Gaffney said. He then continued to punch and kick the officer, knocking him to the ground. Gaffney said several other staff members had to restrain Guerrero until they were able to handcuff him. Guerrero was booked back into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center on three counts of aggravated assault on a detention officer. He is currently being held on a $50,000 cash only bail. The detention officer suffered a broken nose and required numerous stitches for a wound on his face, Gaffney said.
"The ripple effect and impact of the Mexican drug cartels are felt within our jails," Pinal Sheriff Paul Babeu said in a press release. "This criminal brutally assaulted one of our finest detention officers because (an inmate) had a death threat against himself and he believed he would be killed by the cartels upon his release. Our deputies and detention officers already have a very difficult job and it is made tougher by the impact of drug and human smuggling."

Rotary Club Luncheon

On Monday of this week, ten students from Westminster were honored at the annual Rotary Club luncheon. Luke Carani, Maureen Sleeting, Sarah McIntire, Brittany Booth, Frank Oliver, Kyle Christensen, Courtney Gnan, Lauren Mason, Samantha Hoyt, and Austin Lamp were all in attendance.
The Rotary Club is an international organization that promotes leadership and also sponsors scholarships along with many other academic and global services. Every year the Rotary Club of Elgin holds this luncheon to honor “straight-A” students and this year the luncheon was once again held at Judson University.
At the beginning of this event, the principals from each school briefly spoke and congratulated their students on their hard work throughout the semesters. Afterwards, the speaker, Mr. Michael Caruso, gave the students and parents a speech about the importance of school and working hard. Later he even allowed people in the audience to give their own advice to the students about this topic.

Senoritis

Senioritis: noun. A crippling disease that strikes high school seniors. Symptoms include: laziness, an over-excessive wearing of track pants, old athletic shirts, sweatpants, athletic shorts, and sweatshirts. Also features a lack of studying, repeated absences, and a generally dismissive attitude. The only known cure is a phenomenon known as Graduation.  Definition provided by Urban Dictionary online.  Right now this horrible disease is running rampant throughout the school.  I myself have been effected greatly by this crippling phenominon, this article was supposed to be written on Saturday, and it is now Monday.  I am sad to say that even though I am close to the cure, it has not changed much how I am acting.  There are many things that contribute to the slacking; lots of sites such as Facebook and Stumble Upon.  These sites are known as enablers, they have many pointless activities that can amuse you for hours upon hours.  There are also many T.V. shows that support procrastiantion such as Gossip Girl.  The whole show is about girls in college yet the viewer has seen absolutly no homework done, except for the occasional homework that was paid for.  From the cases I have observed personally I would have to say that it usualy starts around third quarter or in some cases as soon as freshman year.  So as you can see this is a very serious problem, and it is not secluded to just seniors.  So be careful, it can be extremely contagious and side affects can start out as little things such as loss of motivation and moderate procrastination. These will progress very quickly so you should try to boost your immunity with a good incentive, that seems to help ward off some of the more severe side affects.  To all  my fellow sufferers, good luck for the time we have left, and I will join you in rejoicing on the day of our cure, graduation day!

Chopsticks

Chopsticks are small sticks used in pairs as eating tool in Eastern Asian and some parts of Southeast Asian countries. They are used to pick up pieces of food. Since it is essential to use chopsticks in those countries, parents strictly teach their children how to use them properly.
It takes practice to use chopsticks well. I could not use chopsticks until I was six years old and had used a fork until that age. When you learn how to use chopsticks, it is important to learn the right way because it is hard to fix once you are use to a certain way. Using chopsticks seems difficult at first, but after awhile, you will feel comfortable with them.

Here are steps of holding and moving them.
1. Hold one chopstick between your thumb and forth(ring) finger.
2. Place the other chopstick between your thumb and index finger.
3. Use thumb, index finger, and third finger to move top chopstick.

Easy, right? When you use chopsticks, the bottom one barely moves, instead, the top one goes up and down to grab food. It will be helpful to look up some pictures on the Internet or ask Asians around you - they are kind.
There are different kind of chopsticks. Usually, they are made of bamboo, plastic, or metal. Do not reuse wood chopsticks from restaurant, they are made to be used only once. But when you buy good chopsticks, you can wash them and use them again.

Knowing proper etiquette is as important as using chopsticks properly. I will introduce some Korean chopstick etiquette.
1. It is good to held chopsticks in the right hand, even by left-handed people because some elders think it is rude to use them with left hand. Also, left-handed chopstick users can elbow right-handed user when they seat close, which is improper.
2. Chopsticks are not used to make noise or to draw attention. It is strongly improper to playing with them. They are not used to move plates.
3. They are not used to impale food, except when someone tears large food.
4. It is rude to pick up a dish or a bowl. If you are eating food that is hard to pick up with chopsticks, then you can use spoon. This is only for Korea; Chinese and Japanese do not use spoon, therefore, it is okay to pick up bowl in those countries.

Again, it is strongly important to have right manners in Asian countries. There are thousands of table manners, but basically it is about respecting others, especially elders. If you have thoughtful consideration towards others, then it should not be problem.
Many ask me how to eat rice with chopsticks. Asian rice is different than those in America or Mexican rice. Our rice is little more sticky, so we can pick bunch of them at once.

Is Turning 100 Becoming No Big Deal?

A few years ago, if someone would turn 100 they would be thrown a party and maybe even interviewed for the newspaper.  However, it is becoming more common to turn 100; people just do not make a big deal about it anymore.

According msnbc.com, the number of “centenarians” has nearly doubled in the past 20 years to about 72,000 and is expected to double again in the year of 2020.  According to reports, just under one percent of people that were born in 1910 lived to their 100th birthday.  It is suspected that girls have a higher percentage of living until their 100th birthday.

Many people say that older Americans have a healthier lifestyle.  They do not sit and lounge on the couch but are physically active.  They take walks or can even take classes at a nearby recreation center.  Most are also living independently.  They are able to cook and take care of themselves.  Also, most of their minds are sharp and their bodies are working normally and healthy.

According to msnbc.com a women by the name of Lynn Peters Adler, who founded and now runs the National Centenarians Awareness Project, found some similarities between the centenarians she spends time with.  They have a positive and realistic attitude.  Even in the midst of a hard time, they are still positive.  They also have a love of life and a good sense of humor.  She also realized that many of them are spiritual and have a lot of courage.  Lastly, she realized that they have a great ability to accept losses that come with getting older, but do not let them stop them from doing what they want.

Even though people turning 100 has become more common, this does not mean that they deserve less attention.  They are truly remarkable people that have lived a long and interesting life.  They are full of wisdom and can teach others about that wisdom and about life itself.
