Special Olympics

The Special Olympics! Those words don’t appear in our vocabulary too often. In reality the Olympics were a huge hit and had more than 600 athletes participate. They ranged from the west to the south suburbs. The “Olympics” took place on Sunday May 1st. The competitors did a range of different track and lifting events. Everyone gathered at North Central College for this magnificent event. It really gave all of the people a chance to do what they love. The day went along just like any other Olympic would. They started it off with a torch run with a bunch of the athletes running. Everyone’s spirits were high with excitement in high hopes that there would be a great event following shortly. “The Special Olympics and events like it improve athletes’ self-esteem and help connect them with other classmates.” Said Kate Hamann, the coach of the Spring Games team. Those athletes who placed in Gold can advance to the Illinois State Summer Games which will be on June 10th through the 12th at none other than Illinois State University. There will most likely be more than 35000 athletes participating. Many of the athletes did an amazing job. All of the athletes and their families feel that it's such a good thing that they are able to step out of their box and show everyone what they really love to do. The coach of the team Sandy Lowder says “I’m such a believer in what Special Olympics does. You look out here and see all the positive reinforcement these kids are getting.” We are looking forward to the Summer Games!
